Re: lokar shifter

I've paid so little attention to those that I didn't know they offered both styles.

I'd think you want the cable setup if you plan to mount the shifter up forward in the traditional spot where a truck 4 speed shifter would have been. The Mechanical linkage would work just as well if you have the shifter back at the seat or between bucket seats. It would be a bit of a challenge to put the shifter up in the middle of the floor hump over the trans and then try to rig the mechanical linkage.

If you look at the shifter in this link with mechanical linkage the shifter sits right at the back of the turbo 350 where the extension housing bolts on. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Lokar-...bly,66480.html

Nostalgia trans mount with cable http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Lokar-...350,43364.html

There is also a cable operated floor mount one you can set anywhere you want to within the working area of the cable. http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Lokar-...ter,34440.html

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

That's just one of many positions you can mount it. You can mount it all the way forward if you want to.

Here's mine. Mine is mounted, I think, on the third position back. That puts the handle a couple inches away from the dash. I could go closer but then is only about 1/2 inch from the dash.

Re: lokar shifter

Sorry, I don't have a picture right now, but i mounted a similar mechanical linkage (as Hussey's shown) Lokar shifter in my 56 and I put it right over the rear tranny housing and have absolutely no problems with it or it's position.

Re: lokar shifter

Mine has an aftermarker hump. Lokar shifter with mechanical linkage, located more to the rear, but as said above can be mounted in several locations. Not the best pics, but here's a couple...Jim

Re: lokar shifter

I have actually used one too, the mechanical type, It was mounted it in the third position also so I wont bother finding the same picture as everyone else haha. but I will say that the 23" double bend looked great sitting still but wiggled like a widow pleaser whenever the engine ws running.

Haha, never thought of that but since it's bolted directly to the trans and being tall, it's definitely going to have some wiggle to it.

Re: lokar shifter

Not exactly the same but I used a B&M 6' racing cable from the bottom of my column to the TH350 trans. Lokar has the same basic set up so you can but the shifter anywhere and cable loops out the back then forward to a bracket on the transmission. Just need to make sure the bend is not to tight.

Re: lokar shifter

Well my bad on that one, I was sure the hot rod guys who run these in their Model A and 32 and what not had them mounted further forward than the mechanical linkage allows for. The way my knee is going I may need one rather than the 5 speed I have for it now.

Re: lokar shifter

I have a cable mounted Lokar in my 55 210 sedan. I would prefer the mechanical one as anytime you have to take the trans pan off, you have to adjust the shooft cable as that is where it mounts up

Yes. I think it fits just about perfect with the curve of the shifter following the dash and the handle positioned in the middle of the radio grille.

Re: lokar shifter

Husey do you like yours? Joe you said there was a lot of movement, but then in another post you said you have a 32 in. So does that mean the 32 moves less than the 23? Would you guys suggest a floor or trans mount? Seems like you guys all like the linkage vs the cable. Is this correct?

You take your trans pan off every 3000 miles? Why?

mine was a 23 so if I said 32 in another post I was dyslexic. the chances of a 32 wiggling less than a 23 are really really small though, a 32 will wiggle more. take a dowel rod and clamp one end in a vice and twang the free end, now take a dowel rod 9 inches longer than the first and repeat.

Inquiring minds want to know on that one as standard fluid and filter change is about 20 K or even much more now.

Re: lokar shifter

All things considered, I would prefer mechanical linkage over a push pull cable for long term reliability
