Sm465 help
My trans is whining in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear but not fourth. I have changed the gear oil out and still has not got any quieter. Is this a part I could replace without doing a total rebuild?
If not, how hard is it to rebuild? I seen on Novak that it says about anyone with general mechanic knowledge could do it. But I've also heard that it is very hard. Thanks for any help.

Re: Sm465 help
Also, it don't make any noise when sitting in neutral. And in gear the whining stays constant with engine speed.

Re: Sm465 help
Probably the cluster gear bearings.....in high gear, the main input shaft couples directly to the out put shaft and drives straight thru... Lo,2,3,R run thru the cluster gear that rides below the main shaft...it's under a load until you go into high gear.....
I've rebuilt several...and it takes a couple of special tools to make it easy.....I made a bearing puller for the rear output bearing....I would loan it to you if you promise to return it..........also I have a book that shows the disassembly and re-build in detail....if I can find it? You'll need some heavy duty (flat) snap ring pliers....and access to a shop press.... If you decide to do it........go ahead and get a full rebuild kit if you can afford it.....you'll be glad you did.......these things didn't shift real good but you'd be surprised what new synchronizer rings will do..... Does yours jump out of 3rd gear?...common issue....there's also a fix for that... exploded view http://www.midwesttrans.com/chevrole...ansmission.htm

Re: Sm465 help
So is it a part that I will have to take the trans apart? I have a hydraulic press. I'm wanting to be sure of it because it's the first trans I'd be rebuilding.

Re: Sm465 help
Yes........pretty much full disassembly, you can't get the cluster gear assembly out any other way.....these things don't usually give trouble.....did it get water in it or run low on grease?

Re: Sm465 help
I think water. When I drained it after it had been sitting there was some water in it. I was reading somewhere that said it could be something that I wouldn't even have to pull the tranny. Just take the tunnel off. Oh and by the way it doesn't pop out of gear and shifts decent.

sorry......but about the only thing you can do from the top is pull the cover off and work on the shift rails and forks...the rest is buried inside the case....very snugly....... very slim possibility...but the shift fork sliders may be sticky...but again you said it shifted decent....the water has most likely trashed the bearings....there's probably some surface rust on the gear teeth but that really won't kill it unless it's pitted deeply...how long did it sit?

Re: Sm465 help
Quite possibly from 18+ years ago. Haha but maybe it was the springs they were talking about. I know the clutch and pressure plate have some surface rust on it.

Re: Sm465 help
Yes it has been sitting since around 2002. It started whining from the get go as soon as I got it ready to get on the road. My other option is buying a used one. I found one for $150 but kinda worried about the condition of it. Not sure how to tell if it's good or not.

about all you can do to examine a used one is to shift thru the gears and turn the input shaft to feel for and listen for any kind of roughness......also drain the grease and look for metal particles and, of course, water.... Personally I would pull it and re-build....then you know what you have....
