Sliding rear window woes...

I just bought a sliding glass window assembly that came out of a 1976 C10. The first thing I noticed is that the rubber gaskets and felt linings in it are all old and deteriorated. Those things seem to be impossible to find replacements for. The other problem is when I attempted to remove the two black pieces of the broken plastic window lock to install my brand new one made of metal, the screws on one of them broke off in the window. I hate to have to drill out the screws because they are rusted into the aluminum. The screws got wet and rusted into the aluminum with oxidation. Does anyone know where to find decent replacement rubber and felt linings? I may also need to find the metal piece that attaches to the window to avoid drilling out those screws.

Did you try any local glass shop, I am sure they could find the parts needed to fix the window.

Unless things have changed since the 80's and 90's, which they very possibly could have, those sliders are really non serviceable. We replaced lots of them after accidents due to one piece of glass being broken or the owner convincing the insurance people the latch got broken from the impact etc.

I even recall inquiring with our local glass guy about the cost to have a piece of glass cut to replace a broken portion. It was cheaper to buy a new complete slider than try and fix the existing one.

I already checked with the local glass companies and the CR Laurence people but cannot seem to find what exactly is needed to fix it. It is going to take someone who has already fixed or restored one of these to tell me exactly what parts to get, and where to get them. I find it hard to believe in this day and time of the internet that no one out there reproduces these or knows what can be used in place of reproduction parts.

Its a old aftermarket piece is why no one remakes anything for it.Remember the late 70s and early 80s everyone wanted t tops ?A lot of those aftermarket t top kits used are the in same boat with no replacement parts.

Well, that's probably why I sell every solid back glass I acquire within a day of posting the ad. I hear the same thing over and over, broken this or worn out that on the old slider. They were born as non serviceable and die as broken and worn out. Believe it or not, many of the modern sliders in modern trucks are the same way.

I sure wish that I had known about this phenomenon before I bought this. I'm always seeing these being sold and people buying them, but I never knew there was a problem with the parts wearing out with no more available.
