Can you replace a solenoid on a LS starter?
The ignition stud on my LQ4 starter was corroded and snapped off when I went to tighten it down. New starters are $150-200 for these engines at the parts store, wondering if the solenoid can be sourced/replaced?
If not, what are folks experience with the budget aftermarket starters like this one? https://www.amazon.com/Discount-Star...dp/B004T1YSSG/ Last edited by MidLifer; 09-16-2016 at 06:25 PM. |

Re: Can you replace a solenoid on a LS starter?
Check ebay. I found a LSx starter, new, on eBay for $45.89. The reason I haven't bought yet because the the auto parts girl gave me a starter for $105.00. The reason I bought it from the auto parts store because I'm impatient, lifetime warranty, and I can swap it on the fly and not have to wait for a replacement. A week was to long to wait. I'm trying to drive my swap by October 1st. I also paid $55.00 for a lsx water pump. Have you seen the price for a new, water pump lately? Good luck MidLifer.

Re: Can you replace a solenoid on a LS starter?
Come back and let us know how it worked out. I've always replaced solenoids on my old starters and it was no big deal. On my LT1 (95 Z28) the starter was designed to make it nearly impossible to replace the solenoid. I ended up with a budget starter like the one in your original post and so far (6 months later) it's working great. The only problem I had with it was that the posts on the solenoid were reversed (battery connected to inboard post on new starter vs. outboard post on OEM). The cable was long enough and flexible enough that it wasn't really a problem.

Re: Can you replace a solenoid on a LS starter?
The star sockets arrived today and I could only get one of the bolts out. The other two are too close to the case. I gave up and went back on eBay and found a new, "open box" starter for $40. Done. I'll sell the solenoid when it arrives, and now I have a set of star sockets!
