Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
Do any of you guys preventatively swap the oil pump or oil pump o-ring before installing your LS swap? I have a 2006 LQ9 that I'll need to remove the oil pan from because a piece of the rotted dipstick tube fell in the pan. Some people say not to mess with it unless there is an oil pressure problem.
Engine has 110k miles, but I'll be staring right at the damn thing. What would you guys do?

Preventive maintenance is worth a lot..if your worried about it and your that close why not go ahead and do it..although I didn't do anything to my lq9 swap..it had 107000 miles on it..got 50 lbs of oil pressure..these engines seem to last forever..

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
It is a common problem the o-ring will fail on its own . There is no way I would put it back together without replacing it with that mileage if I had it apart . Just be sure you do some research and get the proper o-ring ( there are 2 different ones ) . If it is leaking it will aerate the oil because it is pulling in air until oil will fill oil pick up completely . This is why some engines are noisy at start up and quiet down . I have personal seen two engines do this . Just take your time putting in . Just a small nick can cause problems .
As mongo said , preventive maintenance . In my opinion the oil pump will be fine . |

That's 2 for 2 yes votes. It seems like the pump should be fine, but it can't hurt to replace the o-ring. I work with o-rings everyday at work, so I understand the importance of proper installation!

My D D 2003 failed this summer and it only has 80K on the clock, so I think time and mileage are against you, $3.00 now $300.00 later your choice !

Absolutely replace the oil pump now. Having the engine out with the pan already coming off, it would be silly not to.

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
My plan was just to replace the o-ring. Is it really necessary/ beneficial to replace or upgrade the whole pump?

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
Allow my analogy.
Your 65 years old. You've see a ton, done a ton and lived. But certain things just don't work like they did when you were a kid. The doctors tell you to watch your diet and excercise, to keep your heart healthy. You know you've got lots of good years left, but heart failure is known in your family. Science has come a long way in your life, and now, you can have a brand NEW heart...and it looks, fits, and works just like your old one. Its even made out of the same materials....sometimes even better ones. For a reasonable fee, you can have this new heart...and they can do it while your already having some work done anyway!! So........do you get the new heart? I have no idea why i wrote that...but it came out so I'm leaving it.

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
Gonna be like opening Pandora's box. First, you gotta deal with that big-azz balancer bolt, a one time use part. Then comes the waterpump (do you replace that?) then the timing cover. Once you have that off and can see the oil pump, do you let things go or do you change the timing gears/chain? Then you think , hmmm, how's about changing the cam, 'cause I'm right there and it's just a simple task......

In the end, "do what you want" applies.

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
CJ , Just beware it is not just take the pump off and slap one on process if you do decide to change the pump . You have to disassemble the pump and set it up with feeler gauges for clearances . You could have problems with that new heart if the doctor does not do the job right . 110k miles is not a problem for a oil pump on these engines if the service has been kept up .

Definitely replace the O-ring. It is a lot easier to swap it out while you have the motor on a stand then while its in the truck.

Re: Replace Oil Pump / O-Ring Before Swap?
Definitely only doing the o-ring for now. I forgot that the front cover has to be pulled for the pump itself. I agree with the Pandora's box analogy. I'm actually surprised someone didn't recommend I inspect/replace bearings while I had the pan off! If it weren't for the broken dipstick, I wouldn't be opening this motor up at all.
