Vent window whistle
anybody have the problem of those annoying vent windows whistling. What would fix these for good. I put a helthy bead of silicone around my old ones, but I don't want to do this again? Mabey a new handle, or weatherstriping(if you can even get it)

The windows are a pain to work on. I scored a vent window in good shape at the junkyard for $25 for my passenger side. It fixed the wind noise on that side. Still searching for one for the driver's side. The windows are very easy to change.
The if the rest of the weatherstripping is in bad shape that will also cause wind noise. There are a lot of companies that sell this. |

out of sheer fustration we stuck an old matchbook between the latch and the pillar and it lessened the wind noise but im still searching for the weather stripping kits at a decent price

There is replacement weatherstripping to put on it but it is a big pain to get on there. I want a company to make a one piece window kit for this or a kit to make the wing a solid glass.

I just open mine and then its just wind noise instead of whistling. The handle on mine is like coming apart so it doesn't pull it closed very tight. LMC may have the stripping your looking for.

Mine are all blistered out Like the metal is rusting under the rubber. Pisses me off. The truck has not rust and always been in GA.
My 79 and 75 did not have this problem.

I put a quarter between the latch and frame. Actually the passenger side took 35 cents, by adding a dime. Not completely fixed but better than it was. I also wondered about silicone since I never open them.

I ordered new rubber seal from LMC and it was hell to put in. I think it is worse off now than it was. After putting the new rubbers in it was like the glass got about an inch shorter and did not meet the rubber correctly at the top. I done this at the same time I installed a new door. It took me about 6 hours to do it. I also replaced the seals for the big window and it turned out real nice. I sanded and repainted the framae for the vent window it it looks pretty good. It is on a '73.

I just ordered new vent window seals from LMC today before reading this thread. Each piece of rubber was 16.95 (4 x 16.95). I had some other stuff to order anyway, so I just ordered it all from LMC even though JCWhitney has them for 49.95 a set (includes both sides). Also there is a set currently listed on eBay. Those of you who are saying that these seals are difficult to put in, do you have any pointers (other than "have a professional do it")? Also, how are they fastened in? The pics in LMC's catalog show little holes back to the frame, but I'm just wondering if that's for rivets or screws or what. Thanks, Mike W. |

I am going to go ahead and try the other door then go back and redo the other one. There is a nut, washer, and spring on the bottom of the metal that goes around glass but the top hinge has rivets in it. I just ground them off and replaced them with 4/40 screws and nuts. The rubber that goes around the window just kinda snaps in. I didn't have much trouble getting it in. It all fit fine but the window looked like it shrunk about an inch. It didn't seem to be tall enough to seal off at the top. The bottom of the glass frame has a stud sticking out of it that the washers, nuts and springs go on. You have to poke a hole in the rubber were the stud goes through the bottom part of the rubber. I think when I do my other one I will figure out an easier way to do it and then redo the first one.

Thanks for the info on the install. I guess I was looking at the picture wrong in the LMC book. I didn't realize that the window had to come off of the hinges. I may let the guys at the body shop do that when they paint it. Then again, I might try it myself.

Weather striping is probably the solution. Mine doesn't whistle too bad but my bro's car has terrible wind noise and it is very challenging to hear the stereo on the highway and this is due to bad weather stripping, $400 a door though so he hasn't done it yet. It's an 85' Pontiac Parisienne so from the same era.

I don't guess the window HAS to come out but to get a better seal I think it would be better. You would have to cut the seal on one side to get it around the stud and the upper hinge where the seal would go around it.

I love vent windows. I don't understand why anyone would replace them with a one-piece window (unless you are trying to update your truck, I guess).
As for the whistling, make sure the window is completely shut (I am not being a smarta$$). Don't pull on the handle, it will only make it loose. Push on the front of the vent window from the inside the truck and push on the back of the vent window from outside the truck. Pulling the handle alone won't stop mine from whistling. If this doesn't help, find some weatherstripping.

actually the silicone doesn't work that bad, I used clear silicone, I suppose you could use black if you were more careful. All I did was open up the window and put the silicone on the weatherstripping that would touch the window when closed. I would do it again, but I do like to open them every no and then, especially if I forget the remote for my shaved doors in the truck

I replaced the weatherstrip on mine and the drivers side whistles even worse now. The pass side one is as it was and doens't make any wind noise at all. I think the prob is in the locking mechanism. The pass. side has probably never been opened much and the drivers side has. I'll try to shim it a bit and see what happens

Couldn't we just make a stencil and have them cut? Old hot rodders do, and are not expensive to cut. Just a thought I've had in the past, after the whistles, replacing seals, more whistles, broke a frame, etc.
