Power steering pump mounting ????'s

So I plan on starting a pw steering conversion tomorrow. I gathered all my parts I think. So I'm trying to plan ahead for the pump mounting bracket. I am a fabricator and have access to steel and a shop, I will make a bracket if I need to. Although if one is readily available and cheap that will work, I will go that route. So this is my set up. The pump is from an 85 pickup.

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

Could I get away with a 'standard' bracket or am i going to have to modify something?

With the short water pump and drivers side mounted alternator, you can use a power steering pump bracket and pulleys from a '63-'72 truck or a '68 and earlier car. Also since you have heads with the accessory holes, you could use a '68-'72 truck alternator bracket set. That assembly is a more solid mount that what you currently have.

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

Ok so I finally got the box mounted and the steering shaft all spliced and everything, just need to figure out this pump and bracket. So according to Capt. I can use a oem bracket from a 63-72 truck and it should work with my short water pump and my driver side mounted alternator. I cant seem to find what exactly that bracket looks like. Can anybody send me a link showing that bracket. Thanks, Im sure you veterans are just shaking your head at me.

I imagine a web search will allow you to fish rather than begging for fish. Hours faster too.

I'm thinking you could measure from the face of the head to the center of the alternator belt, then trundle off the the local pick a part armed with a ruler and find the parts you want. Note that long water pumps have a mount for the PS pump so you don't want one of those.
Another option is swap water pumps and move to a long setup. You already have later heads.
I'd use lock washers on the water pump.

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

There are a few different PS bracket assemblies used from '63-'72. With the smaller balancer on your engine, you should be able to use any of them. In my experience the '68-'72 PS pump brackets are easier to come by. You also can go with a quality aftermarket bracket such as one from Alan Grove Components.

You are also going to need the crank pulley to drive the PS pump.

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

I'd like to resurrect this post. I am in the process of performing the PS upgrade and have everything for the gear box and want to set up the pump. I installed the lower bracket that you see in pics. Do I have the right brackets on the pump itself, where and how does it attach?

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

The brackets you have on the pump are for a long water pump. Your engine has a short water pump and the bracket you have bolted to the block is for a short water pump. You are missing the other half of the pump bracket that goes with what you have. That piece looks like it may be from/for a '69-'72 truck?

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

I bought PS pump pulleys from Alan Grove Components. A tad pricey, but super simple and worked beautifully.

Pretty sure I used P/N 400L, although I called them first to confirm before ordering.

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

Thanks for the help. Can I use something simple like this an eliminate the all brackets except this one?

Ok, looks like this one too. Next question. Will a standard single groove pulley work?

Re: Power steering pump mounting ????'s

Buy the Alan Grove one, it's a copy of the GM style. That other single bracket is not strong enough, there's lots of geometric forces going on when spinning pulleys! Does your block have the two holes drilled & tapped at the left front? Some didn't.

Meant to say I bought the Alan Grove BRACKETS. not pulleys. Sorry for the confusion. I think I did buy the pulley from them as well though.
