I don't know how old you are but in my case I'm doubting I would be around when that tank needs to be replaced again.

Re: new gas tank

it only makes sense to replace it now while i can get to it easy and i have a new one laying around . the truck smelled like gas every time i filled up so i no the rubber was dry rotting. but would you guys use the tank cream or no?

No.
I would make sure your sender gasket is new and correct as well as the supply tube. So as to eliminate the gas smell.
If there were even a chance of that stuff peeling, which there is I would not use it.
I say this because my tank on my old 32 had some peeling when it was installed, floats to the filler tube bla - bla - bla
