Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

So after lurking around here for a couple years I finally took the plunge.

Two Sundays into my swap. This might take a while, since I can only work on it on the weekends.

What I have: 1984 Sierra Stepside

Lq4 from a 2005 Isuzu NPR
Dirty Dingo Sliders
1987 fuel tank and sender
Corvette regulator
4l80E
Crown Vic Aluminum drive shaft
30 spline 10bolt Posi 373's
dual fans and radiator from 2006 Escalade
with relays and wiring
Harness from Fuel Injection Connection
Trailblazer ss Manifolds

Was hesitant to pull the trigger on the swap because the truck ran so well with the TPI that was in it.

I'll get some pictures up as soon as I can.

Do you already know that this driveshaft will work for you application?

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

It was the driveshaft that I was using with my 700r4 and TPI setup. The 4l80e is a couple inches longer, but I think based on my ruff measurements that I slid the engine forward enough to still use it. The lower A/C mount should work also as it does clear the mount.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

Looking to get the radiator and fans in this weekend. Then it's on to dressing the engine with the accessories and exhaust manifolds. Picked up the conversion u-joint this morning for the slip yoke to get the driveshaft in also.

It's supposed to be only 25* this Saturday and my garage is really tight. I don't want to disrupt the momentum to get this thing running.

I just kept my stock radiator when I did my lq9 swap and added dual fans to it..no problems..the caddy radiator may take some work to make fit

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

Thanks Lee..So far so good. But it's early.

Got the drive shaft in and radiator mounted this week as planned. It's going to be a couple weekends until I get back into it. So many little things to do it's starting to get a little overwhelming.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

So I pulled the fuel rails off the intake..The gas was nasty brown and the injectors look nasty.

Any pointers on how to clean the injectors?

Hello. submerge the fuel injectors in Seafoam a day or two. Good luck with your LSx swap

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

Can you submerge the injector? Or should you keep the electrical part out?

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

submerge the whole thing. It'll ruin the o-rings tho and you'll have to replace them. I used B12 chemtool injector cleaner, the type you dump in your tank.

If the injectors are real bad a trip to an injector shop is not a bad idea.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

I was traveling most of April, but I'm diving back in this weekend.. Fuel system is ready to go. Going to be working on the wiring this weekend. I hope to be able to pull it thru the existing hole in the firewall. I will be mounting the computer under the dash behind the glove box. I have my nephew at the muffler shop making me a couple of pipes that I hope I can patch the exhaust well enough to start the engine.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

I have two short stubs with the sensors in them attached to the manifold. Hoping to splice a pipe from there to my existing exhaust. Passenger side shouldn't be too bad. The driverside is a little more crowded with the shift linkage and the fuel lines crossing over to the frame.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

So I got the wiring pulled thru the firewall, computer is mounted, Gas pedal is mounted, fans are wired.
I do have a question about he brown wire that I believe goes to the voltage gauge.

Where does it go? Or is it not needed?

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

LS1 Tech is the place to have any and all questions relating to an LS motor answered.
"Every" question you could ever have has been asked and answered for the last 15 years.

On this truck forum a few guys have ls motors. On LS1 Tech "everybody" has ls motors. They have a pinout guide that will show you "EVERY WIRE" that comes out of your computer. Where it goes and if it is needed or not.
hope this helps.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

Are you talking about the brown wire from the LS truck harness? That should go to the PCM. Or about the original wire that regulated the alternator? I just removed the brown wire from the C10's original loom.

Re: Lq4 Swap has Finally Begun...

Is the PRNDL indicator plug on the 4l80e only used for the dash or does the ecm need it? It is included in my harness but I had to remove the connector to get it thru the firewall.
