steering box question

A 67 Power steering box would work ideally with Captainfabs frame bracket. But not on it's own.

A '67 truck will not have originally had an integral power steering box. Those did not start until '68. All truck based power steering boxes from the '68-'86 C series and '87-'91 R series will require a steering box adapter plate. The only way around that is to do some cutting welding on your frame to accommodate the steering box. However you could convert to the '63-'67 power assist steering, but those can be a pain to get to not leak.

Please do yourself a favor and purchase the adaptor plate from Captainfab. It's an excellent piece, comes with a precise template for drilling the mounting holes and even comes with the correct mounting hardware. The previous owner of my truck decided he would "Shim" out a 73 box using some 3/4" nuts. While it did work the frame also cracked around his "shim nuts". When I converted to disc brakes I had to weld up these cracks and even used a backing plate on the inside of the frame to make sure the frame wouldn't crack again.

Captainfab's are top notch, Very Reasonably priced and believe me well worth not having the head aches of trying to modify something to make it work. I've purchased both his Power steering bracket and his bower brake booster bracket and believe me they're the BEST.

I'm about the cheapest SOB you will ever meet in your life. For the most part my truck has been built with junkyard parts. Modified Van tilt from a 72 Chevy Van, modified 73 C-10 brake pedal, modified suspended gas pedal form a Mid size Pontiac & 73 Nova, Combination radiator overflow/windshield washer tank & squirters from a Ford truck, My power window & door lock wiring harness came from a 76 C-10, my door checks came from a Jeep Cherokee, along with 2 of the 3 foot well lights I added to my truck, Front 1 1/4" sway bar from a 77 Chevy 1 ton truck, rear sway bar from a Camaro, electric cooling fan from a Lincoln Mark VIII, My rear air bags came from an S-10 & I had to make my own bag mounts from some schedule 80 pipe & some plate. I have access to torches, mig, tig & stick welders, lathe, Bridgeport Mill, a 100 ton press etc, etc yet when it came to the power steering bracket & power brake booster I bought from Captainfab. His items are pre engineered, Excellent quality & very reasonably priced.

I agree, get the bracket from Captain. There is no other direct bolt up steering box that will work. The bracket is REALLY EASY to install. You get a template with the bracket and everything. Hold template up, mark and measure, drill hole. Easy peasy.
The power steering conversion was definitely one of the best mods I've done to my truck.

captain fab...I am looking at a CPP...CP50014 steering box. I want a fast ratio with a stiffer feel. Is this a good box that will work with your mounting bracket on a '63?

That is the power assist steering I was talking about that was used from '63-'67. That is not an integral power steering box as was used from '68-'86 in the C/K series and '87-'91 in the R/V series.

I thought I had got mine from a 67, maybe it was a late year one. The PS box is bigger than the one shown and the input shaft is really short with the rag joint right down close. The two part shaft fit right into the 66 column without any changes. That also surprises me because from what I remember everyone says they need to be shortened a couple inches.

The adapter plate is necessary if for no other reason to pick up the extra lug on the P.S. box. It makes it obviously much stronger to boot. I also consider this the best mod I did to the truck.
