Will LS swap work in original 6cyl position?

Planning on doing an LS swap using the original stick shift set up in my '67. Like to keep the placement of the original 6 cyl. crossmember and bell housing if possible. Is this doable?

I have a 66 but I was unable to keep the bellhousing in the same position as the inline 6 due to firewall clearance. I moved my setup 2" forward from where the bellhousing was and it's still tight around the firewall but it clears.

Thanks for the input. I have a '65 as well and the firewall is much tighter on the 64-66 vs 67-72. Curious if someone has actually done a 67-72 swap

I have swapped a 69.....but will ask a question or 2. Are you running the 3 speed trans, or the old "granny" 4 spd ? Understand, that the gen I small block fits very tight, on I6 stands in a 67-72....the LS fits even tighter to the firewall Shoot a little more info on your combo, & I will try to help....Longhorn

It's a '67 C10 with a factory 250 3 speed on the column. It would be nice if I could leave the factory riveted crossmember in place and place the LS in front of it. That way the driveshaft length, column shifter rods and bell crank location could stay consistent.

There is a bit of fab work to mount the Gen I trans/bell to the Ls based engine. I ran the I6 stands, & moved the engine 1" forward from the 6 spot....but my firewall has been cut (ran a BB Olds , in the mid 90's). I think that you will need to pull forward at least 2 inches , on the bell face position to clear on a stock firewall with the rh head? On the 3 speed trans, you can hang an auto cross member under the trans....but leave the bell member under, to keep the trans & bell in position. Then pull the engine, & you can measure for clearance. There are several brackets that you can use to adjust where the engine sets in, But the drive shaft , will be the last measure. On the bell crank, the only headers that I found to fit were a Hooker street rod shorty. If you shoot a PM, I will send you my Cell phone #....I can talk better/faster than I type Longhorn
