Truck won't start, just drove it. 87 Chevy step...

...4X4, 350, TBI, manual. All original 114,000 miles. Of all the times to quit on me Just launched the boat ( with a travel lift, not with truck) here in Newington NH. Gots tons of running around to do to prepare the boat aaaarrrrg!

Poured gas down throats and it runs and stops...bad fuel pump? Relay? Is their a pump fuze? Got gas, is pump in the tank?

Drove fine all morning, parked it for a few hours and got back in it and nothing, just cranking.

Parts store delivery is all I can do so I ordered a fuel pump and fuel filter, just cause. Dang it

You should check for codes with a paper clip. If there are no codes then it must be the fuel pump.

If I remember correctly, jump pins A and B, the top right 2 pins?

The relay should be in the engine compartment, mounted on the firewall on the passenger side.

The fuel pump should also kick on for a second or two when you turn the key on, in quiet surroundings (or with a friend closer to the pump as you cycle the key) you can hear it.

I found the (I think, if I remember correctly) ecm fuze blown, robbed one from another spot and it started right up. What worries me is what caused it to blow and when will it happen again

For future reference, you can test the fuel pump using the connector that GM handily built into the harness. Coming out of the harness near the relay you will see a single wire with a connector on the end. Connect a jumper wire from the battery positive to this connector. If the pump runs you know it is good and the issue is either with the relay or power to the system.



Here is my own truck. Notice the red wire taped to the harness down near the right side ? That's it. Jumper 12V to it and the pump will run independently of the normal relay and power circuit.

That second relay isn't original. I added it myself. You're actually looking at a 74 model truck in that picture, that I installed an 87-91 spec EFI system. In my case, I used an extra fuel pump relay to keep it looking factory. The little fuse box has two circuits, one keyed power from the added relay and the other is full time power. Both those circuits are my dedicated power supply to the fuel injection and irrelevant to the fuel pump relay system.

Im glad that was something simple. In tank fuel pump at the boat launch would not have been fun!
