Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
Hello everyone. Have only had my truck for a short time so excuse my ignorance.
Recently when filling up at the gas station, gas starts streaming out from under the driver's door. This doesn't happen immediately but usually after about adding about 5 gallons. Have filled up several times before with no issues. Now this seems to happen every time. Looks like an original behind the seat tank in good shape. Filler neck looks good too. Please advise. Thanks. |

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
So, youre sayin' youre getting gas inside your cab and it is escaping through the floorboard or cab corner somewhere? Aside from there being an actual hole in the gas tank at whichever point you are filling up and it reaches that hole, you can check the the sender and pick up tube opening at the top of the tank. I have seen the rubber gaskets fall apart and gas sloshes around and dribbles out from under the sender unit. But also, you need to take that filler neck apart and visually inspect it if you suspect it. You should just replace it regardless. Its cheap insurance to avoid driving around in a potentially very flammable situation. Our old vehicles are not modern gas station friendly vehicles. When our trucks were built, you just dropped a straight aluminum spicket into the tank and told Jim "Fill 'er up." Nowadays, we have to fight the stinkin gas dispensing contraption with the vapor locks and the stupid rubber accordion grommets to find the right angle to so the valve inside will continue to allow the gas to flow out. Especially here in California. I drive a lifted 73 Blazer on the daily. Trying to get gas in that thing is like pulling teeth!

Thanks but the sender and pick up tube at the top of the tank look fine. The filler neck appears to be just fine also. No holes in the tank as once full it never leaks. It only leaks when filling.

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
While filling....put your hand on the filler neck Hose inside the cab.....mine seeps a bit right where it clamps to the tank. Common place.

The filler neck and tank may look good but not sure if you know that they are connected with a short piece of hose just inside the cab close to the filler neck. Check the hose and clamps at that spot. |

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
The filler hose (#6) is usually the culprit. It dries out and cracks.

Thanks for the diagram Slow Build. When I looked at mine I didn't see any hose clamps. Hmmmm. I'll look again.

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
Does it happen even if you pump it slow?
. On mine, if I fill it to fast, the gas will overflow out the filler neck. I pump mine slow and I don't have any issues.

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
Grab a long skinny auto trans funnel and shove it in past the suspect faulty filler neck hose connection and see if you still have leakage when filling. If it does not leak, replace the hose and clamps, or carry the funnel with you behind the seat.

Re: Filling Up Gas Tank Issue
OK. I filled up today and made sure that I shoved the filler nozzle all the way in to the handle and held it there. No leakage. Other times when gas leaked out, the bottom of the door, it was not pushed in all the way.
I'm thinking that maybe I was at fault for not shoving the nozzle in all the way. I'll report back at next fill up. Thanks everyone. A little embarrassed. |
