I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
It's the LQ4 from an '03 3500 van. I'm assuming it has the 4L80E transmission. Are these the same as the truck engines as far as accessories and oil pans go?

Re: I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
seems like there's a few van engines here and they had some issues ..maybe they'll chime in..my 6.0 oil pan resembles a smallblock pan in shape and fit my squarebody just fine..

They are basically the same. The power steering pump will have a remote reservoir rather than the pump mounted one like a truck, and the fan will have more blades and is bigger. The oil filler will have a long tube on it and the trans dipstick will have an extention on it. But for a swap not much difference really

Van motors in general don't have issues, its the fact that many of them were fleet vehicles that you have to account for. The trans in them will have hard miles on it, so don't sweat the possibility of a rebuild (they hold up forever, but when you start making power, you shorten whats left of their life). As long as the oil was changed and it never got way overheated, you shouldn't have any problems that another LS motor wouldn't (and less than the early Ls1 guys ) As ls1nova said, the dipstick is longer, the wiring harness extends farther and is easier to do a DIY harness from IMO. Also be aware that fleet vans can be ordered in odd combo's, so keep that in mind when you order parts. Some mid-year fleet vans had DBW in early 03 before most other GenIII's, some had flex fuel, some ran Hydroboost, and some had odd emissions compliance or special equipment for things like municipal and government use.

Re: I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
This was a Mississippi Dept of Corrections passenger van. The rear bumper was removed but it showed no signs of having ever had a tow receiver on it. It does have hydroboost, which I am getting. No cluster in it so the miles are unknown but a vin search showed an estimated 131k? which I don't have a clue where they got that number. It is drive by cable, I checked that.

My 04 Savannah Van had 370K hauling drywall and towing a 6000Lbs. lift around. They can handle a lot of abuse.

Re: I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
I'm just finishing up putting a LQ4 from a van into my 71. The wiring harness will require more surgery than a pickup harness if you plan to keep it (I bought a pickup harness from board member 68 Four on the Floor), the intake manifold does not have the bolt studs for a vanity cover (obviously the vans didn't have those) and others have mentioned the remote PS reservoir. Other than that, it's the same engine as the pickups had.
Hopefully days away from firing mine up after a year and a half of a very part-time swap project. Good luck with your swap! |

Re: I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
I have a 2001 parts truck I could rob the harness from if I need to. Guy Is delivering the van tomorrow. Wife is not going to be pleased.

It is dbc, I checked that. Yeah, maybe a door sticker for a convict related car shop.

Re: I'm getting a deal on a 6.0l
Fleet trucks really vary. Mines a mid year 03, but is setup sorta like an 04. It has return style fuel, but was a DBW 6.0, and did have engine cover studs and hyrdoboost. So as a fleet truck, it was really well appointed. Some 03's will be DBC and be setup like the 02's
