67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
I came across a GMC tailgate. I don't think it's a repop. Can anyone tell me how I can be sure? I know it's heavy and it's in great shape. All the hardware is on it also.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
It should be 18ga metal, and I think all the original ones had seam sealer on the bottom edge where the spot welds are.
There may be other indications, but I don't know them. Looks like a nice straight gate.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
Any spot welds through the lowered area where the handle cutout is, you can usually know by looking there and a row of spot welds going down the sides about a 1/2 inch to inch from the edge of tailgate. It looks like a repop to me from this picture so far, but I could be wrong, Trevor

Here's more pics. I'm leaning towards repop after the replies. Maybe these will help.

Good call on the spot welds 71, I forgot about that.
Either way, that's a nice tailgate.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
Look for spot welds on the front side. Repops don't have spot welds that weld the front to the back panel. This is what I believe "stiffens" the gates dramatically. Don't know why they haven't ever still done them like that.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
On the inside lower left corner there are a couple of numbers stamped in the gate. I have a couple of take off tailgates that have the stamp.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
That's not much of a pic of the latch but I seen what you were referring to. So it has the spot welds. So does that mean a original?

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it. I'm going with original. It is constructed identical to my 69 Chevy. I know its original.

Re: 67-72 GMC Tailgate Fleetside ???
From what I understand, when tilgates were first introduced the spot welds for outer to inner welds were missing. That's why they got a reputation for bending easily. But theere are better welded gates being made now...and for quite a few years. There are more than one maker. Tri-Plus parts are same gauge, and as far as I know, same weight as factory.
From what I see, the factory gates are dimpled (more visible) at the spot welds across the inset and the repops aren't.
