Fuel tank compatability

Are the fuel tanks interchangeable between years? Looking at putting dual tanks on my truck and found one off of a 77. Any reason it wouldn't work on my 83?

Re: Fuel tank compatability

It will work!
The filler (part the cap goes on ) may be a littler different in the way it mounts in the fender.
And the filler diameter may be smaller too.
Regardless,you can make it work.

Re: Fuel tank compatability

IIRC, the tanks are interchangeable as are the brackets and straps. The senders are sided, i.e. a Left sender only works in a left mounted tank.

As mentioned, filler stuff varies by year so get all the fillers, hoses, and clamps with the used tank. Easier to make one mod to match the bed side then several to make mis-matched tank + hose + filler work.

Re: Fuel tank compatability

Your 77 should have the tank on the right for a single tank.
The tank from the 83 if single tank will be on the Left. (should be ok)
There is too size tanks small 16GAL & large 20GAL ( trucks ).
You do have to watch out tanks on the same side as the one you have as
sending unit will point in the wrong way once put on other side. ( if you get lucky to get replacement tank with universal mounting sender your ok.
73-78 single tank truck factory mount on right side. Can be used on the other side must run new line or extra longer rubber hose because the sender points wrong way.
79-86 single tank truck factory mount on left side. Can be used on the other side must run new line or extra longer rubber hose because the sender points wrong way. ( 87 carb )
