Cheapest way to install AC on a non AC truck?

I tried searching for old posts but can't find what I'm looking for. I've got a 1977 K10, NON AC truck, and I want to put AC in it but I don't want to spend 1,500 on a vintage air kit. Is there a cheaper way of doing it by using parts from another truck and what all do I need? If there are posts about this already, please feel free to point me in that direction. Thanks.

Under-dash unit probably simplest and probably cheapest too.

you can use factory parts off a 81-87, but you have to cut and modify the firewall, so its not real easy. but not undoable either. just depends on your skillset. I added factory a/c to my crewcab. wouldn't do it any other way.

Do you have a sliding back window? If so then get a house window unit and a generator. Ice cubes on demand

I was just at the junkyard picking parts off a 84 'burban with the complete A/C system still there. I was wondering the same thing, if I could make it work in my 81 non a/c pickup.

I just did vintage air on mine and I'm really happy with it. The cool thing about it is there are unlimited fan speeds and blend options for temperature and where the air exits. It's all electronic so no need to run vacuums or cables. The install was fairly simple and the instructions are really well done.

If you add up all new system components for a factory setup (evap, heater core, condenser, compressor, lines etc) and your time refurbishing/fixing/modifying what you cant get new, I don't think you'll save very much over a VA kit.

I'm planning a similar install on my riding mower!

I've done 2 non-factory ac to factory a/c.One 68,C-10 and one 78,C-10.
It's a lot of work,but was worth it to me.

haha I like the idea with the window unit.

So another question I have is, if I went with a factory air off of a junk yard truck, I'm guessing I would need a new dash too since my dash doesn't have any AC vents. Or is it possible to cut holes in the dash and put in some vents? I am comfortable with cutting/welding etc...

The dash is already setup for AC vents, you just need the trim pieces.

Personally, I'm just going to order a Vintage air kit. It all comes in a box and should be a weekend install with all new components, and for $1500 thats not bad. If you don't have the cash to lay out all at once, factory system works just figure $500-600 to get it all reconditioned, new ac compressor, evaporator, lines, and getting it charged. AC ain't cheap but it sure is nice.

Oh and if you do get vintage air, there is a vendor here that offers a good deal on the kit to forum members.
