Front view of a ‘79?

Most of you guys seem to be better at this than me. Next week I will tear the front off my Camper Special if my work schedule doesn’t interfere. New (to the truck) engine, radiator support, radiator, one fender, both inners, bumper, headlight bezels and grille. Everything is good used. The grille was pure luck, I was able to find a decent one at a yard and with epoxy and a couple mounting tabs transplanted from the old grille that came off in pieces, it looks good. What color is it supposed to be? My old one was black, the one I got seems to be faded silver (argent?). Also, is the area around the headlights on the bezels supposed to be painted black? I assume there were some variations. Maybe someone can post a pic or point me the right direction. I don’t have much to go on since this truck is such a mongerel. I don’t want this to turn into brain surgery but I want it to look more or less right.

Re: Front view of a ‘79?

I'm pretty sure both are correct. The black grille with the chrome trim was an option (Standard on the Sport model) and the argent grille was standard equipment.

Personally I prefer black grills with chrome touches, and black around the headlights. There's no wrong way to go.

Re: Front view of a ‘79?

Thanks for the info. I went through the front end pics at the top of the page. It was helpful and interesting, but we all do our “interpretations” and I’m just looking for the baseline. Anyone know how the chrome trim attaches? There are no holes in either grille I have, I assume it was attached with adhesive. Did the black grille come with no chrome? Mine didn’t have any, but it’s been thru hell and half of Texas the last 40 years. I noticed in the front end pics guys were also running black with no chrome.

Re: Front view of a ‘79?

If I remember right the larger chrome mount to the filler backer that the front marker light mount to the holes should be there to mount the chrome. that your asking about.
Same as the 77-79 small strip chrome mounts to same place.
I hope this helps you.

Re: Front view of a ‘79?

I Think the should be 3or 4 pins the pass should line up with small grill opening and the speed nuts are big enough to hold it in place.
It's been long time seem one, if I wrong and they do not line up like that you might have to make steel flat spacer that span across ribs Or might have to drill holes if they dead center for the center chrome/black pieces.
77-79 grill should be the same except color.
