1998 nv 4500 in 64 c20 ?

I have located a 1998 GM NV4500 with the original bell housing. I plan to install it in a 64 c20 behind a first generation 350. I know that I can use the NV4500 bell housing if I run a hydraulic clutch. My question is will the 1998 throwout bearing work with the clutch and pressure plate from the 64 or is there something else I need to do as far as a clutch and pressure plate goes? I planned on getting Capt fabs hydraulic clutch linkage kit. Thanks Ron

I'm not sure if your '98 NV4500 bolt pattern is the same as my '93 but here is how I installed mine....

I have read through several threads concerning the many ways that this conversion can be done, yours being one of them. The 1998 nv4500 has the Dodge bolt pattern with I believe a 5.6 inch front bearing cover. I have not purchased the transmission yet, I plan to drive down and look at and/or buy it on Saturday.

You gonna have to remove the clutch housing crossmember & use a rear transmission crossmember also. I want to see you shifter placement when you get done!

Re: 1998 nv 4500 in 64 c20 ?

I bought the transmission this morning, it is still in the back of my daily driver. I think I got a pretty good deal on it, I paid $450.00 for the transmission with the bellhousing , and recently installed clutch disc and pressure plate. It all came out of a wrecked 98 3500 with a 454 in front of it, with 113,000 miles on it. My plan of attack on this is to remove the cross member under the bellhousing, and install the transmission using the bellhousing from the 98 with the hydraulic clutch setup. I will support the rear of the transmission with a cross member from a 71 Chevy 3/4 ton that had a turbo 400 in it. After reading Capt Fab's response in this thread, I plan to use the early flywheel with the clutch and pressure plate from the 98. If any one has any better ideas on how to make this swap any easier please chime in.

That sounds like a good plan to me. Let me know when you are ready for one of my booster brackets with the hydraulic clutch conversion.

The factory clutch master has a bore of .709". For that application I typically supply a clutch master with a .700" bore. I have a couple of those being delivered on Tuesday.

Thank you so much for your help and sharing your knowledge sir. I won't be ready for one yet, but will get in touch with you when I am. Right now I spent this months budget buying the transmission and some other parts for it. I also need to repair some rust on the firewall near the heater box and paint the firewall, before I'm ready to even put my engine in the truck. Hopefully I will be ready for one by mid March.

Re: 1998 nv 4500 in 64 c20 ?

I finally got the 350 motor and NV 4500 trans in the truck this weekend. I had no trouble at all bleeding the clutch. I used the factory 1998 bellhousing with the transmission, however when I bought the transmission I failed to get the bell housing inspection cover with it. Is there a source for a aftermarket cover one or will I need to find a used one somewhere?
