Spark Plug Wire Boots
Is there any reason to use 90 degree spark plug wire boots over straight boots?
I had bought some of those spark wire boot socks which are supposed to help protect the wires/boots from the heat from the headers, but it's pretty close to impossible to slip them over 90 degree boots. Better yet has anyone see spark wire socks for wires with 90 degree boots? Most say that they work with them, but I am finding it very difficult to slip them through. This is what I am talking about https://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS/555/40311/10002/-1 |

Re: Spark Plug Wire Boots
It's my understanding that the 90 boots are intended to be mounted so that they route the wires under the exhaust to the back of the engine then up to the distributer to avoid heat and give a clean installation. I would just use whatever keeps you away from heat. You need to lube them and they will slide on. I use WD40.
There are many socks out there bigger than those. I got mine from summit, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-350119blk Look how big my "socks" are in this pic...

Re: Spark Plug Wire Boots
What engine in your truck, sbc or bbc?
I just figured out, when doing a HEI conversion, that sbc with ramhorns use the 90 boot and run the wires up from the bottom. But on my 396 bbc the original wires are run over the valve covers and down to the plugs with straight boots. 90 boots would not fit with the bbc manifold.

Re: Spark Plug Wire Boots
I had been running the spark plug wire heat sleeves with 90-degree wires on my '74 before I replaced the factory heat shields for the manifolds. They are a pain to put on over a 90-degree boot but it can be done. An easier way is to gently pull the 90-degree boot off the wire, slide on the heat sleeve and then put the 90-degree wire boot back on. I had Accel, Moroso and Taylor 90-degree wire sets and was able to remove the 90-degree boot to install the heat sleeves.
