If you have all the electrical parts to make the 3 speed with OD work, do it. I love my 3 speed with OD, but it is definitely not a racing transmission. Great for highway cruising all day

I use a manual switch. I can switch it on in 2nd gear. I love doing 50 mph in 2nd. On flat ground I can use 1st locked up so I don't have to shift so much.

I too love my 3 speed overdrive, hooked up with governor. Fun to drive.

What did you choose for a cam and are you keeping the 2bbl intake and carburetor?

I think the cam has a 442 lift. Can't remember all the #'s. I have a stock 4 barrel Manifold I am going with. I will probably end up putting the 3 speed back in. I have some time to think about it plus, I don't know what the condition of the 700R4 is.

You can take that overdrive unit and put it on the back of a Saginaw four speed and have some fun. Just Sayin. It would not only teach the kid about shifting but how important gearing is. I wish they made overdrives for Muncies.

Not a good intake to use unless you mod it.
That long slot on the front of the carb flange needs the holes on either end plugged off.
Otherwise you’ll get excessive heat to the fuel bowl on your carb.
And you need a gasket that has a metal plate to cover up the slot. Along with two thin base gaskets to seal the plate with.

I also used that intake on my 283. I did the 68 base gasket that goes under the metal plate, stuck the metal plate on top of that, then put another gasket that wasn't for the "hot slot" manifold on top of the metal plate to help with sealing and act as a small insulator. I didn't plug the holes, but I haven't had any issues with it after over a year of driving the truck a lot.

If you wanted to run a carb spacer, you could decrease the height of the air cleaner base by the amount of the spacer to clear the dizzy

Thanks I will take all that into consideration. And on another note, you know it must be bad if you're still leaking oil and there's no engine in the truck.

For your area you should probably use 20 weight. If you are going with a flat tappet cam instead of a roller cam, be sure to use an additive during break in to avoid wiping out the cam. I've had good luck with the GM Super Engine Oil Supplement, but there are others out there.

After cleaning some of the frame I was rolling the truck back to its spot and heard some clunking in the front end and grab my pry bar and though it is loose ends so why not rebuild the front and also. Is a good time to do it

I finally got the front and back together. Found a Spring compressor at Napa of all places for cheaper than Amazon. Figure while I was at it might as well recover one of the seats I have until I get the stock seat cover for the original seat. I'm not quite done with the seat, I need some 1" foam as these cheap covers are bigger than the originals

can you post a photo of the spring compressor you used? I'm also about to dive in to front end while I've got my engine out and my compressor tool (hook/bolt type) is ok for macpherson's but doesnt fit between the control arms well. I was considering building a 2x4's wall frame between the frame of the truck and the ceiling joists in my garage and then just using a floorjack under the lower CA, but would prefer to avoid having to patch-fill the holes in the drywall later.

I picked up a coil spring compressor tool from Napa for about $19. I had to cut the bolts down to make it work. The strut tool is much different. The one I used looks like this one. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wmr-w80554

engine looks good! What did you use for paint? Is it from "The Filing Station"? looks like the correct color.

I went to the paint store with my oil pan which had some paint left on it and I matched it up to color samples. This can has the formula on it. Black primer underneath

I have a 700r4 in one of my trucks and it is a great tranny. However my truck was already an auto and still requires a fair amount of new skills to adjust correctly as well as the shifter and lockup mechanism etc. Not to mention if you do any one of these things incorrectly BOOM! You already have a desirable transmission (look on fleabay) and it is already set up for it. I say reseal it and drive that truck. Saginaws are also very easy to rebuild. No special tools at all. My kit was about $80. I have never driven a 3 speed with OD but I sure want to. I guess it really is a 5 or 6 speed when you think about it. And tough to beat the reliability as well as the cool factor not to mention the little brats can't drive it if they try to steal it BWAHAHA!
