How did you remount your bed?

I’m pretty much done redoing my bed wood. Now I’m looking at how to get the bed back up on the frame? I’m thinking of doing an engine hoist to lift it and move it into position. How did you guys do it? That bed is heavy as heck with all the new wood. So lifting it by hand might be pretty hard for me and one other person.

I have a bed lift that is basically a large "H" with adjustable arms that fit under the lip of the bed sides. It has a loop in the middle for either a shop crane or a trolly lift. I used my shop crane when I was mocking things up since I had more help then (holding it from swaying) and then used the cross bar on my lift with a couple of ratchet straps when I was setting it on the chassis for good since I was by myself.

I've done two. On mine, I left out a couple boards, and used my engine hoist and a strap to get it in place. On the second truck I did the bed vertical to save time on the board bolts, so I rounded up a few buddies to flip lower the bed to horizontal and up on the truck.

Once with the lift arms and straps and once with four guys. Both methods worked fine.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like im doing the engine hoist route. Just wanted to see if there was another way besides brute force and the hoist.

I too have a four post lift, but used it to lower the truck off the bed instead of raising the bed off the truck. 4 straps to eye bolts from the bottom of the trusses used. After removing the truck, I then raised the lift up to sit the bed on it,which made it a cinch to disassemble.

I looked at one of the metal bed lifting tools made by Eastwood. I went to my lumber pile and took 1 4x4 and 2 2x4s and built one . Picked up a large eyebolt and drilled a hole in the 4x4. Used my homebilt gantry crane and lifted the bed off and then back on . Worked great. An A -frame or cherry picker will also do the job. Good luck

Good point, I could of used my gantry and trolley but that would of put the lift point in one place. Then you have to deal with keeping the bed level and not moving- swaying too while trying to install it with new paint an so on. Unless you could get some help. If you are helpless like me then it is different

I had my wife hold on to the bed while I operated the winch to keep it from swinging around. My bed came up real level. It was my 8 foot bed off my 2001 2500 HD. Will use the same system when I take the long bed off of my 66. It has a steel plate for the floor.

I usually have to do stuff like this solo so I tape some cardboard to the back of the cab to prevent tearing anything up. Just put the tape in areas you can easily reach for removal once the bed is in place.

We built our own and modified our " cherry picker" by extending its forward arms (wheels) and building a different boom to facilitate a higher lift. I also used the engine hoist balance beam to give us a nice pin point adjustment to set it perfectly level.










I welded up a little cart to let us roll the bed around on too.

Must be winter…i finally got time to put the bed back on. For future people that ask the question that dont have the fancy set ups as some of the previous posts…… i took an engine hoist and some ratchet straps; took the tires off, slammed the rotors to the ground and slid it right on. One man job! Tried uploading some pictures but it wouldn’t let me….. sorry.thanks for all the ideas and help

I have used engine hoists and either straps or made a wood H frame as stated in another post. When I did this bed wood I never took the bed off the truck.

I used a wood H frame and engine hoist. Had the bed off twice like this. It works great but extra hands will make it easier.
