Drive shaft

I have a 1963 GMC half ton long bed that I recently lowerd it currently has a one piece drive shaft and it is rubbing I want to change it to a two piece drive shaft what truck can I get this from does it have to bee a 60-66 truck or can it be a different year my truck is set up with a big block and a 400 transmission any info on the subject would be much appreciated

67-72 has the same wheelbase as ours.

Now, the variables will be your transmission length and the rearend you have.

The overall length of the TH-400 is 38 inches, while the overall length of the TH-350 is 33 5/8 inches, if both use the longest tail shafts available. The TH-400's body is 25 inches and the TH-350's body is 21 5/8 inches long. The tail shafts for the TH-350 are available in 6-, 9- or 12-inch lengths and the tail shafts for the TH-400 are available in 4-,9- or 13-inch lengths.

You are going to have to have one either custom made or at least shorten one to the correct length. It is impossible to find one that is going to be the exact fit for your specific engine and trans combo. There are just too many variables. With that said, you will want a HD driveshaft. If you need the mount for the HD carrier bearing, I make those.

Ok so I should be able to make a 67-72 drive shaft work possibly shorten it to the length I need. What is an HD drive shaft? Is the HD carrier bearing mount something I can bolt on or would I have to weld it in? I was also wondering if it would be possible to just cut or ream out the top portion of the cross member to give the drive shaft clearance???

Do you have a picture of your frame where the trailing arms connect to the crossmember?

Leave the one piece shaft in, most get rid of the two piece due to the weak carrier bearings. Just replace the cross member to a dropped one and you will be in good shape. I had a long bed and shortened it to a stepside. I got rid of the two piece because they are junk. Ordered a dropped crossmember from CPP and had a one piece shaft made with a slip. I have never had a problem in over 5 years of doing that. Trust me you will never be happy with a two piece.
