I'm still here...thanks for thinking of me.

The transfer case is still broken. I limped it home from the shop Saturday. THAT was fun They were going to charge me $430 to rebuild it....forget that....I'll do it myself or I'll find a used one. So if anyone knows of a good 208 in the Oregon area, let me know cuz I need one
I have better things to spend $430 on....like my new (well new to me) engine.

My neighbor is giving me his 350 for $50. All it needs is a new piston. So I'm going to rebuild it as I have time and money. I've got my summit racing catalog and am making my wish list. I'll be posting later about suggestions for cam, intake, and other goodies to give my truck more power.

And I'll have more money to work on it cuz I just got promoted today!...although probably less time.

I went to work as an engineering technician making $24k a year and walked out as the materials supervisor making $30k a year starting Tuesday after the holiday. I had no clue they were going to do this. Needless to say, I'm excited and nervous about this since I've only been with the company for 6 months and some of the people I'll be supervising have been there for many years. I'm sure there'll be some animosity at first, but no worries...I've been through it before.

Anyways, that's what I've been up to these days....I'm still around, just really really busy...

Ohhh...and I have another "secret" project I'm working on in my vw...if it comes out good, I'll do it in my truck and then post about it, with instructions on how to do it....but I'm not telling ya'll until I know it'll work!!

What kind of VW is it? I have a 2000 New Beetle GLS 1.8 Turbo with 5 spd. Its great, gets atleast 25mpg even with plenty of WOT applied. And its decently fast (0-60 7.6) and handles better than anything i'm used to driving. No mods to it so far.

It's a 1989 VW Cabriolet...white.


I picked it up as a driver for $1700 while I get my truck done. Next to my truck, this particular body style is my favorite car under $50k :p
I get 22 mpg on it. Not too bad for a high mileage engine and much better than the 12 mpg I get in my truck.
It just turned 200k miles last week and it runs like a top. It has a wimpy 1.8 in it that will eventually get replaced with a 1.8t or I'm going to get aba heads....but the truck comes first. It's a 3spd auto but I have a lead on a 5 speed manual for $50 if I can carry it 100 feet without dropping, dragging or rolling it
It's been a blast now that it's summer. I'm doing small, inexpensive mods here and there because I don't like cars that look like everyone else's so I have to put my own personal touch on it.
You should visit www.vwvortex.com. Lot's of vw enthusiasts over there with tons of ideas for mods, fixes, etc....it's like this forum, but vws.

Nice car BTW. I just got me a VW a two months ago. I got the '01 Jetta w/ the VR6. It's lots of fun. You got me really curious w/ this "secret" project. Can't wait to see what it is.

I an registered over at the Vortex, great forum. Thats kinda why I bought this car, to use as a daily driver so I could work more on my truck, but once I get A/C on my truck and some other little things fixed i'm going to start driving it again, don't know if i'll sell the beetle or not though.

I am going to get some clear corners for my beetle and maybe lower it with a wing on the back, it has one of the spoilers that raise up automatically at 90mph which is pretty cool, or I can raise it up with a switch.

On my first tank of gas I got 25mph and that was with a very heavy foot, gotta love turbo chargers hehe.

Sounds like weekend dollar-days at the junk yard? Ohh the memories.. The last time me and my buddy went to one of those, $40 each got us in, we ended up leaving with a 14bolt full floater, a pair of iron BBC heads, several driveshafts, core support, and misc. small parts.

my buddy carried the axle. the best bet for carrying that tranny is to bring a nylon sling like a tow strap , preferrably with looped ends, and position yourself directly over the transmission, and run the sling over your shoulders (once or twice) and down to each side of the tranny.. then you just lift with your legs about 4-6 inches and walk slowly.. that distributes the weight evenly and you can carry a LOT of weight that way. That is the only way my buddy could carry a 14 bolt axle w/ drums for that far.. but it wasnt 100 feet! thats kind of far. i think at our junkyard it was like 15 feet or something...

I can pickup a 700r4 and put it on the bench, a small 5 spd should be no problem, you can ship samurai 5 spds through USPS their so light.

It's out of a 1982 cabriolet. I can get everything I need for $50 during the all you can carry special or $100 if it can't be carried. I've heard these trannys are only about 75 lbs and I'd just put all the cables, adapters, clutch peddle, etc in a duffle bag and carry it on my back. Or I can send my husband out to do it. I'm just used to going for the big jobs at the yard myself since our daughter can't come into the yard so my husband hangs out with her while I go 'shopping'.

The problem with bringing the tranny home right now is too many projects, too little time. Although it's a great deal, so I'm thinking of going for it and just letting it sit until I have the time to determine if it needs a rebuild (probably) and figure out what's involved with the conversion.
