Mandatory Seat belts?

Can anyone shed some light on when Chevrolet started putting seat belts in Suburbans and trucks? I know 1966 had Chevrolet seat belts. My 64 Suburban has aftermarket seat belts that have the nubby belt material. I have been talking with someone very knowledgable about the Corvettes, and passenger cars. He tells me that the 64 should have had Factory seat belts, and a webbing material as apposed to the nubby material. My thought is that the 64 Suburban had owner installed aftermarket seat belts. Any one have solid info to back this up either way? Thanks in advance

Re: Mandatory Seat belts?

Seat belts were ruled mandatory for all makers by 1968. Chevrolet beat them to it by making them standard equipment for trucks starting in 1966. They were optional before that. If you are asking when Chevrolet began offering them as an option, I don't know exactly, but they were available for many years before they were mandated.

Re: Mandatory Seat belts?

My 61 Suburban had the webbed clasp type seat belts (3 sets across the front) and I believe them to be original. (Perhaps a dealer add-on)

Check out this link with some factory info

Re: Mandatory Seat belts?

Thanks for the great info. My 64 Suburban has aftermarket belts from a company out of California called Shore- Calenvar Inc. The belt material is nubby, which is no longer available. I have found the correct style and color by simply watching the eBay site. The problem I am having is the correct Shore-Calenvar cloth labels. I sent my original labels to Snake-oyl, but they could not remake them because they were not readable. I am certian that my seat belts had always been in this Suburban since it only has 68,000 original miles, and they look like they have always been there. I was most recently told that they should have had GM belts. But I'm thinking that may not be the truth. It seems more likely that the original owner added these after the purchase. Thanks to all that chimed in.
