I think you could do a lot better for a lot less money.

I agree with that, but I want something that no one else has in an 81-87 Chevy, and it has to be fuel injected. The LS1 that comes stock in the Camaros is actually higher in price that that one is, plus you don't get everything with it. The one I posted above comes with everything minus the ECM and wiring harness.

The harness to go into your truck is going to run you about $750-850 and the ECM is going to run about $250-350 with a custom tune for that truck. Those are the prices I was given to put a 99-04 LM7 into my 83. IMO I'd agree you could get a better motor or get a pull out from camaro/vette for less with an ecm/harness and save yourself some $$.

Do you plan on finding some ways to incorporate some of the 2004 GTO features into your truck?

No, not really. Just found the engine while searching, saw that it was cheaper that the regular LS1. I do plan on putting a Richmond 6-speed behind it though.

I'll prolly just have the 350 rebuilt for now. I want to find something that will get good gas mileage and have good power. I know, I am asking a lot.

As far as 6-speed's go you might want to consider this one:
This one will put the shifter in the original location so it does not interfere with the seat or center console.

Aftermarket GM
w/ shifter modified for 4sp replacement application
$2575.00

Standard Transmission & Gear Co.

EDIT:
The Richmond only has one overdrive, while the T-56 above has two.
So it depends on which you would prefer. If you plan to drive at highway speeds often you may want the two overdrives, if you are more for hotrodding around town with some highway driving the Richmond 6 would suit you fine too. I believe the 4-speed shifter location is something to really consider.
