Stepside Spare tire hanger

I am working on my spare tire hanger. I have an OEM hanger with the 6 lug pattern. These are the 2 options I see to make it work for a 5x5 lug pattern...

Cut all 3 studs off and weld a 7-8" circular disc to the front with 3 new studs in the correct pattern

OR

Leave the face OEM cut the 2 bottom lugs off and weld 2 new studs in the correct place on the OEM face..See pic.

Which do you think would be a better solution? I am also open to other suggestions. Thanks!

I lean toward option 2. It keeps it simple, more original, and less chance for rust by avoiding a pocket between 2 separate pieces of metal.

I will be cutting/relocating studs on mine, but using the existing plate.

What about a thin wheel spacer adapter?

Use cap screws like this vvv

I thought about the possibility of rust about the same time you posted. I do like the idea of it looking OEM...the only time it wouldn't look OEM though is if the wheel is off...but I would know. Thanks!

Are you going to use threaded rod or drill into the face and weld bolts from the back side?

I'd likely weld bolts from the back side.

I also need to alter the mount slightly, to fit the long step brace to my short step bed, but that's not your issue here.

I have both, but I think I am going to cut off the 2 bottom studs and weld 2 new studs or bolts on. I think it will be cleaner in the long run, plus cheaper. Good suggestions though! We were thinking across the same lines!

Fortunately, I don't have to alter mine! Since I am a beginner at welding (literally) I think a bolt through the back and welded on will be simpler and easier. Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone and helping me think this through! I'll try to take pictures of the finished product when I am done and post here or at the very least on my build thread.
