I just bought this 83 K10 and it has a 4 speed
Muncie transmission .. I got what I think is a good deal and decided to buy this one and go back to my shifting days ..
I do have a question though,, are these Muncie sm 465 4 speed transmissions going to give me a hard time shifting a lot in the city where it's stop and go between lights? It has been a long time since I have had a manual transmission ,,but I read that these have a wait time between shifting gears up and down Any thoughts on this ?

Re: I just bought this 83 K10 and it has a 4 speed
I have never noticed a big wait time.
They are not like the 4 speeds found in cars though. It's not a (Speed) shift transmission 1st gear is not a syncro'd gear. 2nd, 3rd and 4th are synchronized.

Re: I just bought this 83 K10 and it has a 4 speed
Just drive it and see what you think.
The worst thing about stop and go traffic is the constant clutch pedal usage. A slow 2nd/3rd shift is not as big of a deal. Other transmissions will shift faster, but you'll still have to use the clutch. Converting to a 85-87 hydraulic clutch would make the pedal effort easier, and supposedly converting to an internal slave/release bearing would make it easier yet.

Daily driver ? If so and your in heavy traffic a lot….it will get old fast.
I have a couple of trucks with the SM465 and they seem to be damn near bulletproof proof. One of them (84 K30) has a 460HP big block in it and I drive the hell out of it, I shift it as fast as I can, which is not very fast Nice truck Quote:

Most sm465s that I've owned I didnt even need 1st gear...always started in 2nd unless I had a load or on a hill...I've drove sticks all my life ..so it doesnt bother me with constant shifting..
My buddy has a old dodge with a t56 in it, he did the power tour one year...his legs were wore out from clutching thru the small towns with huge pt traffic clogging them up.. Great looking truck

I will back up the converting to hydraulic to make pedal operation easier. Those Z-bar pedal return springs are ridiculous.

Return spring is not a factor.
Style of pressure plate is what to watch for. A nice raised finger diaphragm plate is best. You might have a 3 finger borg and beck in there now. Definetly a left leg abuser. |

I have a customer that's a retired GM/Allison engineer that did the durability testing on this trans and I had ask him about using Mobil1 synthetic in it. He told me that once you break it in and change the original fluid - it about stops wearing at all !
