How rare are 6 lug 16in 3 nub wheels?

Been trying to find some stock 16in wheels for a long time now with no luck. It seems like the later 4 nub 16s are SUPER rare but the earlier ones seem to be just as difficult to locate. Looks like they are special order not regular production which is why there are less out there. Why would someone order that size wheel at that point in time? Different tire availability?

Im going to check out a set that the owner does not know if they are 15s or 16s. Being fairly rare what is a fair price to pay these days? Ive heard that the Power King 9.50x16 tires are no longer in production (which was the reason I was looking for 16s) but can also run the new BFG 7.50x16 or 255/85s which has the factory pizza cutter style.

Any info appreciated, wish me luck!

Re: How rare are 6 lug 16in 3 nub wheels?

The trailer wheels aren't the same offset as the originals. I would have gone that route but wanted original back-spacing.

My experience is that it depends on the width you're looking for.

I have spent time looking for 16x5 nub and clip style and they seem less plentiful than the 16x5.5 or wider versions.

Just picked these up on marketplace. 5 miles from home and only $100. Ive been looking forever too, just got lucky. Gonna be perfect for my K10, hope they do one last batch of 9.50x16 PowerKings if not BFG 255/85s it will be

What did the 5.5 size wheels come on? Not sure if the ones I just got are 5 or 5.5, I wonder if the 4wd got the wider wheels?

Fantastic Score 1966 K10!

Wow, you even got the hubcaps too (or did you have those already I'm guessing?); UNREAL Luck and Timing.

I believe those are the 16 x 5"s.

Congratulations

I'm not entirely sure, but i think it was pre-1963?

I had bought a 1962 GMC 4x4 that had 3 16x5 clip wheels and one was slightly different and when I had the rubber removed I discovered it was 5.5 width.

It still has the clips and I think the last year for clips was 1962?

Thanks for the response JP.

I too have a 1962 GMC that has 5 of the 3-clip variety 16" wheels, but they are 16 x 5. I researched one post on the earlier 47-59 series forum and someone mentioned they had a 16 x 5.5 wheel but that was about it.

They are a tough wheel to find and maybe more information is forthcoming on that 16 x 5.5" wheel. Thanks again

Re: How rare are 6 lug 16in 3 nub wheels?

The only 16x5.5 wheel I can find in the GM parts books were 8 lug . All 6 lug were 16x5 from 1954 to 1968 with clips or without . Heres a link to The Wheel Thread

I'll post pics of the one that is 5.5

Perhaps it is not a GM wheel but the center is identical to the others that are 5 inch.

Look between the beads and see if its stamped 16x5.5 or 5 1/2 also. Be very curious if theres any other markings on the rim.

Re: How rare are 6 lug 16in 3 nub wheels?

This is one of clip style wheels with speed bumps that accepts that 7 5/8" hubcap. 15" or 16" wheels without the sharp speed bumps will not accept the '62-'66 7 5/8" cap. 16" 6 lug wheels have always been hard to find, something you do not realize till you go looking for them.

Here are a few pictures of the mysterious 16x5.5 wheel.

Unfortunately.the disk rivets went right through where the width stamping is.

Profile picture is 5.0 width on left and 5.5 on right.

Oh Wow, there it is!

The partial stamping on the rivets makes it even more mysterious I think I can barely make out an "X" and another "5", but it's definitely a 5.5" width and with 3-clips.

Thanks for posting JP, from where did you source it?

I have a single 16”x5” wheel. Interestingly it has 4 nubs but is slanted on the back side. Similar to the earlier 3 nub style wheels have for drum brakes

This one was on the truck when I bought it.

I had been looking for a 16x5 clip wheel to match the other 3 but ended up with a set of the 63-up nub style in the meantime.

It looks like a GM wheel but as 60-60 noted, its not listed in any parts books. Not impossible its off something else sharing the 6x5.5 lug pattern from the same era. Not sure what that may have been.

During my search, i want to say I came across these but didnt pursue because I was closer to making a set with the 5.0 inch width.

Another rare wheel chev-obsession; and the 4 nubs tells you it will work on disc brakes.

I did a quick search thinking it may be a Ford or Dodge wheel, but nothing came up with those specs. I also checked at the AKH wheel site. They sell some rare wheels, but I did not find it there either.

Re: How rare are 6 lug 16in 3 nub wheels?

Interesting thread, nice info.

Ran across these 16x5's and snapped them up. Not inexpensive but they were in great shape with what looks like original paint so I couldn't pass them up.

However, after reading this thread, I believe they are 60 thru 68? Really wanted to use them on my 69 K10 because the color is dead on to my body color. We shall see.

These 16s were on my 66 when I bought it. I loved the look of them but their inability to cooperate with disk and calipers was a bummer

There is a mismatched set of 16" six lug wheels on marketplace, listed as "Chevrolet Wheels" in Clover South Carolina for $180. One is three nub with squared off slots, three are four nub with straight slots.
