71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Im putting a 2004 5.3 in my 71 SWB. Ive got the body off the frame and also installing coil overs and some other stuff. Anyway the power steering pump wont mount up to the motor because the frame is in the way. Ive seen that you can get a relocation kit but I was wondering if I have any other options.Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Is it not fitting because the fluid return tube hits the frame?
I cut the fluid return tube and 'clocked' it a different direction and welded it back on. |

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Thanks for responding. After watching a couple of youtube videos Im guessing Im supposed to be using an older style pump? The pump that came with the LS has a plastic body and a much taller neck on it than what Ive seen. but if I wanted to use pump and bracket that came with the LS I would have to cut out a significant part of the frame. This is my first time doing an LS swap

Try to post a picture of your setup. The pump that came on mine looked like this picture and the return tube hit the frame...but I cut and rewelded... |

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
I'm betting that LS came out of a van or something other than a 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck.
I guessing you can replace it with a "typical" truck power steering pump. |

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Thats a type2 pump. They used that same one on Trailblazers. You can't just bolt a type 1 pump to that bracket though as the holes are spaced differently. However brackets for type1 pumps are literally everywhere these days so they are really cheap. I would just get another bracket and the type1 pump. I have never had any fitment issues with them other than sometimes having to slightly bend the return hose nipple on the pump.

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Another question since youve done a few of these. What do I need to do in terms of my power steering hoses? Im using a 71 steering gear. I beleive I saw something about either adapting the pump or the hoses. Thanks again for any info

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
I like to use -6 SS line on the pressure side. It has to be the teflon lined -6 line due to the high pressure.
On the return side I use regular -6 or just parts store rubber power steering hose. |

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
Probably the easiest thing to do is to swap out the fitting in the back of the pump with the one from the '71 pump, then use the original hose, or a new one, but for a '71 truck. The only problem with that is you have to have the type1 pump to do that, as the type2 pump you have the fittings won't interchange.

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
For the return line I used Gates 361350
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 For the pressure side I used Edelmann 71088. This has the metric 0-Ring for the Pump side then I used an adapter for the Gear. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Adapter: https://www.summitracing.com/search/...keyword=500IOA |

Re: 71 SWB LS swap power steering install
meant to say I used my stock 67 hose with the above fitting. donor truck was a 2002 tahoe 2wd if that helps. I think I'd check what truck the OP got that pump out of to make sure the fitting would work
