oil pressure flutter
My oil pressure gauge works perfectly most of the time. Then occasionally, it will suddenly start to flutter really fast +/- about 10 psi. Is this likely a gauge issue? (I think gauge as it is intermittent). Engine is a 6.0 LS so I will post in the swap thread as well.

oil pressure flutter
I have a 67 with a 2001 6.0 running the original mechanical OP gauge. The oil pressure reads fine most of the time. Occasionally, it will suddenly begin the fluctuate really fast +/-10psi. Any idea if this is an engine issue or a gauge issue? Thanks.

Re: oil pressure flutter
I know extra work is never fun, but in this case it's rather easy to hook up an alternative mechanical gauge and check for sure. Obviously you'll need to leave it hooked up for a while to see if the intermittent fluttering happens again.
Generally speaking, whenever I have heard of someone diagnosing ANY sort of oil pressure anomaly, the first thing is to replace with another mechanical gauge and go from there. So that's what I suggest. I'm weird and just happen to have 17 different known working oil gauges lying around, so this isn't too much to ask of myself. |

Re: oil pressure flutter
Is it after hard cornering or a fast stop? Could be the oil pump is uncovered briefly. If it is an electric gauge, a poor connection would be a possibility.

Re: oil pressure flutter
Not likely you can get our older trucks to produce a high enough load to uncover the pump. If you find this is the issue and a bit of an over fill does not correct, contact me. I can hook you up with a custom shop that does excellent baffle work in So Cal. He did a pan for my LS2in to a BMW MCoupe that could pull 1.3 g's in a corner or stopping and not starve the wet sump.

Re: oil pressure flutter
Sorry I left out the details. It is an original mechanical gauge. It happens in various places, but usually just cruising in a straight line. That is why I can't figure out how to reproduce it.

Re: oil pressure flutter
When you get it to happen, have you checked the oil? Is it frauthy? That would indicate air is getting in the oil pickup. I think your first step is to get an inexpesive gauge and rule out problems with current unit.
