Cab top lights - '66 C20

I'm nowhere near ready to deal with this part of the project, but will ask now to plan ahead. Two questions re rooftop running lights.

1. Who makes a replacement? I could probably get the paint off the chrome, but would at a minimum need the gasket they sit on and the lenses.

2. How does one go about replacing wiring? The 5 lights become 1 tan wire behind the driver's left shoulder, but I can't see any way to access where each one merges up above. I REALLY don't want to go removing welds etc but maybe that's the only answer? I'm afraid to pull too hard on one to see if there is enough slack, but guess I need to try.

Re: Cab top lights - '66 C20

I just reinstalled my freshly polished cab lights on my 65. believe mine were a dealer add on and had the same tan wire.

I used a coat hanger to fish a new wire on one of the holes because i drooped the end of a wire down and was no longer able pull a new on in the easy way lol

you can buy a generic thin foam gasket at home depot or online somewhere and trace it out with a razor blade

my front clip wasn't installed so I had decent access to the top standing on my front wheels. Its nothing fancy at all as far as the wiring goes. You should be able to handle it no problem. If you dont drop a wire you can just pull a new one in through the top as you pull the old one out. Tape or knot new to old and pull. Easy peasy

Thanks! I don't know if it was installed by the dealer or factory, but they do show in the AIM. I can handle that as long as nothing breaks off, and most likely if it does I'll work around it. Even tho the cab is not attached and I'm a long way from reassembly, I may go ahead and try to run something down there just to prove I can do it.

Yeah you shouldnt have any issue. Ill share a Pic of my cab lights when i get a chance. Mine seem a bit different then yours. they have glass lens with chrome casings and i only have 3 not 5 like yourself. on a 65 c20. i just put my cab on the chassis and have been playing with wiring more than id like too. If your cab is already off you'd have an even easier time getting access to the top with the front of the truck out of the way

The light assembly itself is chrome, just been painted over a time or two. Might get out some acetone or lacquer thinner and see what happens.

Thank you Rocknrod! That's exactly the one - I just took a close look and Yankee 77 is what's on there now. Perfect! I appreciate the help, guys!

Pdxhall recently ran the wires on his truck for the cab lights. Check it out starting in post 772: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...515110&page=31

Good reference, thanks!

Altho I'm probably a year away from doing this part of it, I did unscrew one light to see how it will go. No problem. I'd say new wire will be a long-overdue upgrade!

The lights were all working when I parked it in 1990, but the insulation has to be toast.

I've got 3 painted ones that are going on my truck. You're lucky to have the wiring all there. It took me a lot of work to get the wires snaked through. I ran them over to the driver's rear cab corner, the same place thaat the dome wiring goes. I also converted mine to LEDs. I've also got them wired to their own switch so I can turn them on/off separate from the other lights.

Those look great!

Too may irons in the fire at once, 2 "project" vehicles, property to maintain, family, play music, etc. And I'm not a kid, there's timee when the body says "That's enough for now!:

Plus I'm changing my plan of attack on that cab. I have almost all the pieces to replace the floor. Decided I'm going to send for a 1-piece floor, and sell off the parts once it's in. Much less chance of screwing something up that way.

It's getting there, if I live to 105 I think I'll be able to enjoy it! Just kidding, I enjoy the challenge of each little step along the way with it.

Thanks. I know how life can get in the way. It's taken me years to get where I am. I can only get about half what I used to get done in a day.
