47-55.1 Window channels

1950 chevy 3100. One piece door windows.


I have a list of things I still need to do and its nice to be working on the truck again.

One thing on the list are the window channels.

Installed a couple years ago. Used adhesive. Couple years later and the adhesive has failed in some areas. Driver side drops down now when window is down.


Can I use some small machine screws instead of glue? If so what size?

I'm thinking that mine had some tiny counter sunk screws in a few spots. Original or installed by a glass shop dude before I got the truck I am not sure.

I was looking at one of my doors the other day that still had the metal part of the glass channel in it with the idea that it was going to be the front half of one of my stretched doors but it is cold, went and dark out there right now.

Mine came with flat head slotted sheet metal screws holding the channel in place.

The doors I can reach have window channel that looks like this with the tabs on them that tuck into the lip of the window opening and hold the channel in placle. Not much help when you don't have the clips and no one makes channel like that.

I did look inside the opening in the door on my 48 and it does have a hole (s) for small screws.

I don't have 1 piece windows, but the channel I have is a version of what mr48chev shows, but rubberized(?) on outside and no little tabs. I had to drive it in place with a window thickness piece of plywood, it seems pretty secure. You do have to cut it to the right length as the lower end gets trapped by tab on the lower guide piece bolted inside door and the upper end by top of vent window frame, between those two points friction holds it in.

i use a brand of glue called fuse-it by liquid nails. some of my trucks are still local and none have lost their stick.

way back in the day I used to drill with an 1/8 drill bit and use a 1/2" pan head screw, if you set it below the felt level it doesnt scrape. i dont know how they found the holes with those tiny screws that were factory. they dont seem like a self tapping screw, were machine thread if i remember.

I found the screws wouldn't "self tap", so I got a small drill bit that fit the screws, put the felt in place with some masking tape, drilled a hole, and installed a screw. I didn't know any better.
