Linear activated hood.

Hi.
Did a search useing hood linear actuator but nothing came up. Maybe been done and i just searching wrong words.
Just wondered if it has been done. Could it be done?
Useing linear actuator on both sides to open and close hood .
Wonder what force is needed to actually pull hood up from spring location, and if even possible. Dont know if hinges can handle it.
Could be added safety that hood cant just be opened by someone else.

Thoughts or info anyone?



Just one of my weird and/or freaky ideas.

Used in place of springs, to lift and lower the hood and keep it open so to speak.
Retract and pull to open hood and extending to lower hood.

Thanks for reply, interesting but not precisely what i had in mind.
They do look very nice , and with a nice price tag included.

Went and downloaded some pics of what i have in mind. Different strokes availible and push/pulling forces from 600n to 1200n.
Installing this in place of spring on stock or stock type hinges.
And using actuator to open and close hood.
What i dont know is if the hinge will handle it and if if the actuator is gonna hold the load of hood if it's open.

So you want it like a Dual Gate opener except vertical instead of Horizontal, With a Lock (Which would be the hood latch).

Now we are on the same page

You need to use Wiper motors on the hood hinges.
That can be accomplished with gearing and bracketry

Most importantly is to make sure the hood is Not latched

Before the motors start to raise the hood.

Yes but using them horizontal. In place of the hoodspring,
The spring helps a person with lifting hood and keeping it open, so i'm thinking remove springs and mount actuator to open and close hood.
Thing is its working the hinge to lift hood, not directly lifting hood.

So is the end goal to make something similar to the automatic opening and closing tailgates on some SUV's? That'd be another place to look to see how things work.

just my two cents but don't think it would work on the hinges. Would need a lot of torque to open hood and don't think the hinges would take it. if you went in front of hinges and make some brakets to Mount actuator to hood and inside fenders that would work but not as neat looking

My buddy also noted that last night when he dropped some parts.
He says cool idea but will need serious hinges and little bit reconfiguring to aid the lifting leverage. He also noted that it is new car tech and for him does not belong in classics. To him it spoils the simplicity of the whole truck. Can't argue with him on that.

For now back to drawing board and some homework to do ,

I kind of agree with your buddy, these are simple vehicles, and certain things just look off on them. You could always change it up by going with billet aluminum hinges.

Like i said, i cant argue with him either, just one of my weird and wacky ideas.
I think my biggest hassle in life is that i want something that has a unique feature on that others dont have, and he reminded me that there is several things on mine that is different compared to the other 60-66s around here.

Anyway. Thanks for the replies.
Still gonna dig more into it and maybe use it on some of my other cars.

Ah. Big engines do look good in these engine bays.
Mine , 455 pontiac switch pitch 400. When i was doing finals with the install.
I need to finish off my brake upgrade and get it all cleaned for some more pics.

The lesson I learned is that this is a one time only project... anything else is getting the engine it came with. There were times I was thinking an accidental fire would have been the right option.
