700R4 questions
I have some questions about a 700R4 transmission.
Ever since I got my truck, 350ci, the trans would shift late, and too snappy. I was told that the trans should shift 1st to second at about 19 or 20 MPH. With 3.73 gears, the RPM's are pretty high at 19 or 20 MPH. I adjusted the cable as best I could, and the trans shifts, nicely at about 10 or 11 MPH, but I was advised that that speed was too low, and would damage the transmission. Wat is important for the 700 R4 shifts RPM or MPH. Also I recently installed a 2500 stall converter Any thoughts ? |

Re: 700R4 questions
The TV cable needs to be adjusted correctly by the " book ". It sets the line pressure rise according to the throttle position. Which also requires the use of a proper throttle arm. If you're using a non 700r4 carb or thottle body. If you don't have enough line pressure rise, when under throttle. You can burn up clutch packs.
Shift points should be adjusted by the governor, not the TV cable. |

Re: 700R4 questions
By using a factory governor with higher shift points. If that's what your looking for. Or using a governor recalibration/ shift point kit. Places like summit, jegs, speedway, ebay, and transmission parts houses, will all carry them.
The late / harsh shift, sounds like your TV cable is adjusted too tight. Or is not traveling through the correct arc. |

Re: 700R4 questions
The cable is self adjusting, you push the button and slide the inner part back. Then you floor the gas pedal and it will ratchet to the proper adjustment. With light throttle 10ish is fine, about what mine does. Heavier throttle later shift. When mine started shifting later and harder for no reason the transmission died shortly after. It's possible someone put a shift kit in yours.
