63 Fuel Tank
It has been sitting 32 years, I believe the gas cap might have been off some of those years. I think I remember a rag and a bag over it different times.
I put some fuel in it... It leaks at the seam. I was planing on getting a different tank anyway, but was hoping it would not be so soon. I saw new tanks for a Chevelle that are filled up behind the license plate. Don't think that would be good for when I tow something and need to fill up. Plus I may stick a spare under the back. I ordered a side frame mounted tank. Should be fun trying to make it fit. It was under $100 A sending until that I can run a return line. I've tried a bunch of things on my 56 to keep it from vapor locking (it also has a 350). 56 does better after adding an Electric pump, routed fuel line away from engine, wrapped headers with the fiberglass tape but its not perfect. Some really hot days it will acted up. If adding a return line on the 63 works well, I will do something similar to the 56. More room behind the seat would be nice.

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
What side mounted tank are you going to try to use? Please post some pictures showing your progress

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
I plan on putting it on the drivers side.
I will post pictures. I have not started yet. The tank came in and a mounting bracket. Only ordered one bracket to see if its worth getting the other one. I held the tank up in place, and will need to modify some stuff, but I think it will fit fine. They have "Gas Tank Cap JeCar Fuel Filler Door Cover for 2007-2018 Jeep Wrangler JK & Unlimited " on amazon that might not look bad on the finder. But undecided on that at the moment. Need to get the tank mounted and see where I want to go with it. Tank I ordered: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C7S3VY...roduct_details sending unit: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000C7TWCS...roduct_details Bracket: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CJNL3VX1...roduct_details

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
I'm not sold on this tank or putting the tank here....
but I will mess with it some more to see. Would still need to put something between the tank and the bottom of the cab. I guess my biggest fear is that it is right under the drivers door. It also hangs as low as the exhaust. If I did not want to put a spare tire under the back I'd put a tank between the rails back there. What do you guys think?

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
Either my eyes are fooling me or its a couple inches below the frame rail 🤔🤔🤔🤔….to me that would nix the whole scenario…my .02

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
I know you just did an initial mock up, but I'm with MT65 on this one. If it ends up hanging that far below the frame rail, that's definitely not ideal.
On the squarebody, part of the tank was under the seat, the rest of it was under the bed. Of course, the floor was stamped to have clearance for that setup. This idea would require a good bit of metal work, but I've thought about cutting up the rear wall of the cab to be more like the squarebody cab shape. That would allow the tank to sit up higher and be more protected by the surrounding sheet metal. I also don't want to lose my spare tire under the bed. I also want to take the tank out of the cab at some point. The trailing arm rear end definitely makes that more of a challenge since it doesn't allow space for a tank between the inside frame rail and driveshaft. If your truck is a leaf spring rig, that's something that could be an option

Re: 63 Fuel Tank
Thanks, yeah I dont like it there either.
For what its worth the stock straps fit to hold that tank up. Those pictures are before I strapped it up. My stock tank is bad and leaks. So I figured I'd just spend the time to move it out of the cab instead of buying a tank I dont really want. What do you guys think about a thin tank at the front of the bed? It would not be that hard to weld up one up. Auxiliary tanks are pricey. 4.5" thick would still give you close to 20 gallons. saw online a tank with a tool box on top. Could just build a tank that fit under a tool box.
