Bell Housing

I have this early chevy iron bell housing #3776887, dated A239, I plan on selling. I have been all over the net, but am having trouble identifying the years, this bell housing was used. The closet I found was one for sale that said it was used on 1958-'59 Chevy and GMC trucks.
The two top trans mounting holes are threaded and the side mounts have one threaded hole, with bell housing starter holes The input hole is 4 11/16".
Any help would be appreciated.
Thks

Was going to add a pic, but for some reason it won't let me down load it.
Size wise it is in the parameters for a jpeg.

Re: Bell Housing

You might have a car bellhousing.
Truck bell’s didn’t have the 4 11/16 hole until 1969.

Re: Bell Housing

Thks for responding.
Looked on the 4speed conversion site and this one wasn't listed.
Any other suggestions of sites listing bell housing numbers?

Re: Bell Housing

Except for the larger center hole for the later 4 speeds the center hole and bolt pattern is the same car or truck.

4-11/16 fits cars from 55 to ?? trucks from 48 that have a 3 speed or SM420. 68 and later with a SM465 have a 5-1/8 bore bearing retainer hole. That is by checking Novak adapters info on SM 420 and SM465. Who knows how many thousands of guys have pulled a SM420 out of a 48/59 Chevy pickup and stuck a 3 speed or Muncie or Saginaw car 4 speed right back in as long as the clutch spline matched. The V8 truck bellhousing that came with my 48 in 1973 had the stock 48 torque tube trans, a 55 or later something car or truck 3 speed and then an M21 Muncie.

From there we need clear good quality photos to look at to get our brains to do the "oh, yea, I remember" thing.

This is a mid 60's V8 truck bellhousing 3815891

The big difference between car and truck and years of is how the motor mounts attach to the bellhousing.

60/62 trucks Had a hydraulic clutch that had the slave mounted on the passenger side. I don't know the casting number but those V8 bellhousings have some favor with traditional hot rodders who want to run a hydraulic clutch with a Chevy V8 and stick.

Get us those photos and lets see what ya got going with that unit.

Re: Bell Housing

IIRC all four transmission to bellhousing bolts were installed from the back in trucks but the two lower bolts were installed from the front in cars. Or, IOW, the lower bolts are threaded in trucks and are drilled in cars.

And car bellhousings had two bolt holes for the engine mount while truck BH only had one.

Re: Bell Housing

The going price for a 55/59 cast iron truck bellhousing in this area has been between 50 and 100. Sometimes a little more all depending on who is buying and who is selling.

60/62 Truck bellhousings have the fork on the right hand side and are set up for hydraulic clutch.

63 and later put the clutch fork back on the left hand side. The larger bore for the bearing retainer came on trucks equipped with a SM 465. 48 / mid 60's 3 speed or SM 420 all had the smaller bearing retainer.
