I had a guy, pretty broke looking, come in with an old car that he'd gotten a fix-it ticket for the brakes. We were a brake inspection station and I had the state cert. Said he knew it needed brakes, but asked if I could sign it off and he would do them later. I told him do the brakes and come back. It would be just my luck that the guy was a ringer and I'd get busted for being a nice guy. The shoes were basically bare metal with serious grooves in the drums from the rivets.

You triggered a memory....about 20 years or so ago here locally a 90 year old man took a Concealed Carry Class and failed, he then offered money to the instructor/owner to pass him. The guy took the bait and was put out of business and prosecuted as the old guy was a plant.

^ We used to get people all the time offering $50 or so for a smog cert after their vehicle failed. I asked them if they would give up their personal freedom for $50. They usually got the message.

now "hot smogs" are $350 and up IF you can find a shop that will do it. Way back when i was doing exhaust work people would call up and ask how much to remove their cat and install a "test pipe", i would tell them $10,000. naturally that would pi$$ them off and they would tell me i am crazy so i would explain that the fine would cost me 5 grand at least and the other 5 grand will keep me going untill i could find another job or post bail. needless to say nobody ever took me up on the deal
