Glass shop trying to tell me new windshield seal will leak? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am having a new windshield put in my 85 K10 because the seal leaks and its cost some chips and being its not very expensive i'm just gonna have a new one put in. So I told them I wanted a new gasket and lock strip because mine is 20 years old, I get home and theres a message and their trying to tell me I shouldn't need a new gasket, because the new one will likely be more than likely leak worse than the old one?

I think something aint right here, since when did 20 year old rubber seal better than new rubber?

I'm gonna tell them to put the new one in anyway and if it leaks i'll bring it back and make them fix it lol.

I just got a new windshield put in my '77 last year.. they came to my garage and did it, new glass, rubber & lock strip, and new antenna button, hasnt leaked yet... I dont buy it, id put a new rubber in.....

Maybe their new seal experience has been with sub-standard parts.

I had a new winshield put in my 84 'cause the old one was just too scratched up from road grit and the guys that did it really didn't want to put a new gasket in.
Sound REAL weird doesn't it?
A guy that doesn't want to make a mark-up profit on a part.
He said the old ones never wear out so.........there could be something to not needing a new one.

I had my windshield replaced last summer along with a new rubber seal and a new chrome locking strip. I requested a GM seal from the local dealership, but I was under a tight time constraint and couldn't wait for the GM seal. They assured me that their seal would work as well. They installed the windshield, the seal, and the lock strip. They also applied a 'black adhesive' around the perimeter between the seal and opening. To date, I haven't experienced any leaks in the rain or snow.

I got to the shop and they told me my seal was in good condition so I let them re-use it, saved me some money, but I did tell them they could only use it if they guranteed it wouldn't leak because that was the whole reason for having it replaced besides the minor chips in the glass.

But on the bright side, its much nicer to have clear glass when the sun shines on it! Before the pits and crap would make it hard to see through with a glare.

Yeah new glass is always nice on a old truck. My wife had a rock hit her Tahoe last night on the way to work. Its not to bad just a small nick no crack yet. Ill worry about it when it cracks and starts to run.
