305 wont start
305 wont start
this motor came out of my 72 4 years ago runing in great condition. I have had to pull a 250 out of my 81 1/2 ton and put this 305 in there. the dizzy had been pulled prior to going innto the 81, now everything is in place and I'm pretty sure the dizzy is correct and the plug wires are correct on the dizzy, if I throttle the carb, by the way the carb is a edelbrock 1405 manual choke, (not hooked up) I cant see the gas ,but I can see where you can see the mist comming out of the top of the carb. it wont start. when i crank the motor over it cranks good and then maybe after 4 to 8 seconds of cranking it will back fire,(sometimes flames out the carb). I have rechecked the timing, I'm pretty sure it is correct from what the chilton's says. new spark plugs. could it be that I am missing something, I have to get this running today and I am getting no-where... Please any input I would appreciate and defenitly run outside to try __________________ Its Gonna be a Great Day, I woke up this Morning. You don't have your distributor 180 degrees out by chance ?
I'd pull the #1 plug and make sure it is TDC on compression when the rotor points to #1. It has been sitting 4 years, I assume it has been in doors and was prep'd for storage ? Point distributor I assume ?

the motor had been in the garage all the time, I have pulled the #1 plug and made sure the piston was at the top of the stroke, and each time (3) the rotor was always pointing at # 1. this is an HEI distributor. I pulled #1 spark plug and checked for spark on it and yes there is spark, new plugs gapped at .045. there is gas getting to the carb, I pulled the line and she had plenty of gas.

Not tryin to be a smart ass, but the piston tops out in the bore on the exhaust stroke (180 degrees) as well as the combustion stroke (0 degrees). I'd double check that you are on the comp stroke and not 180 out before you get too far along. I know it sounds petty but I have done it many a time.
Just tryin to help. Last edited by screamin_c102; 03-06-2005 at 07:48 PM. |
