I'm new to the 60-66, whats the major differences compared to a 67-72
I'm the new owner of one of these, actual year I dunno. I know its a c20 and I got it for $200.00 its got the 350 ending in 0010 but that will come out inplace of a newer 350... its a 2 wheel drive. I just bought it to haul around engine parts and so forth. its got a 4 speed in it, are these 4 speeds the same as 67-72 ones... hope to have her on the road in the next few months. Just gotta make space to work on her... thanks guys..

I'm not sure on the differences other than the body. I'll have to defer to someone with more knowledge. But Welcome!

Sounds like you got the same basic 3/4 (C20) ton truck and idea that I have in mind with my 66 GMC...and you bought it for the same price I paid!
If the 4 speed has a obvious "hump" on the right side of the case it's most likely a SM 420. Good strong trans, I've been told. I don't want to sink a lot of cash into my truck, just use it to haul trash/ parts and the occasional car trailer to move one of my other projects. Since my truck sat for years the brakes are bad, and if it is an easy bolt-in of junkyard parts, I'd like to put later front disks on 'er. Best of luck with the project! |

60-66 will have drum brakes all around, starting in '71 it went to front disc/rear drum.
60-66 early years will have an SM420. Sometime before '71 they changed to the SM465. Both really durable 4-speeds. 60-61 will have torsion bar front end. Beyond that, normal independent front. Torsion bars were supposed to ride better, but were more expensive. 60-66 will have GENERATORS. 67-up switched to alternators. That's all I can think of at the moment. Oh, the frames are pretty similar, but I think the 60-66 is x'ed in the middle, giving it greater strength. Brian Last edited by bpmcgee; 04-25-2005 at 10:57 AM. |
