Why couldn't you use your old exhaust manifolds? I will eventually be swapping out my '86 305 for a 350. I have been told both that I can and that I can't use the old manifolds. Since you have actually done this, I'm hoping you can give me a straight answer. I'm also hoping it will apply to me since there were changes between '86 and '87.

The only reason I couldn't, or didn't, use my exhaust manifolds is because they were warped. I could have worked on them to make them fit, but it was a good excuse for headers.

Slonaker: It could be something with the six bolt / seven bolt heads difference possibly? I think its a 305 vs 350 thing with the cylinder heads.

Actually, that was the issue. Almost half the people say they are the same, almost half say they are different and incompatible. The few that are left say that they have different numbers of bolts, but work anyway.

I don't know what is right, but it sure would be nice to find out. New manifolds or headers and the changes to my exhaust sytem that it would require could increase the cost of the conversion by several hundred dollars, as low87 just found out.

Izzy, TX BBQ is something nasty. After inviting us to the best BBQ in Dallas you have absolutely no argument. Unless that's just how water buffalo ribs are supposed to be. I guess you Texans need the jaw workout.

The Goodwrench block I got is the '91 version, there shouldn't be any difference between that and the '87.

BTW, 88-98 model headers will fit the block of an '87, but will not clear the frame. I tried some shorties and the dump right into the frame. Getting them to work would have meant notching the frame for the exhaust. Really blows too since I could have had some new ceramic coated headers cheap.

Both my old '87 305 and the Goodwrench '91 350 had the exact same bolt setup for the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. I've yet to see a difference anywhere on either long block.

I never said that was the best BBQ, James did and personally I can't stand that place I had no choice.

My engine is weird one with a one piece rear seal like yours, but yet it still has the valve covers with four bolts around the perimeter like the early ones. Since you went slightly newer to several years newer than mine, I'm not sure how applicable your experience is to my situation. At first I had assumed that you went backwards, like I want to do, with the old (cheap) 350 with the 2 piece rear seal.

I'll keep reading and asking questions...

I had problems with the 6/7 bolt deal. The 84 305 that was getting replaced with a 76 350 the cylinder heads where different. The 84 was all stock so it had stock 84 305 log exhaust manifolds. Those manifolds were longer than the what was normally used for the 76 350 cylinder heads. So they installed an adapter plate that made the 84 exhaust manifolds bolt up and not leak. I still have that adapter so I can take pictures for you if you want to see what it looks like. For some reason the passenger side of the block was the only side to have that adaptor. If you want to make a separate post about this we can do that. Or if you want to PM me more about it. I figure another post would be better to help someone else that might be in the same position.

Sorry for stealing the tread Greg.

Everything looks really good with the engine bay all cleaned up.
