Saddle tank help needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Hey guys i am trying to take the saddle tank out of my 4x4 to take it to get it cleaned(haveing to change gas filters every 40 miles),i got the cab tank out but not sure how the saddle tank is mounted.I tried the three bolts on the bottom of the tank but nothing there.Also it is a wood bed if that makes a difference.Thanx....

If it is like mine there are two bolts the tank hangs from. You should see the heads in the wood part. Mine have oval shaped washers. They were a bear to remove because of years of debris accumulation in the holes for the bolts. On the bottom you should see two funny looking nuts with two holes in them. I sharpened a flat screw driver and used it and a hammer to turn them. You may want to jack the tank up slightly. When I was able the break them I used a ratched without a socket to turn them. Save the bolts, they cant be replaced. Make sure to drain all of the gas out, and disconnect the sending unit wires and fuel lines first.

Those are the ones holding the tank in there. You will be darn lucky to get them un-done. The only way to drop that tank with a Minnesota truck is to grind the heads off the bolts and let it drop. After doing that you will usually find that the top of the tank has rusted through.

I dont have anything that looks like those on mine,I have three bolts on the bottom of my tank,Is mine different than most?

ours looked like the above pic.Once the floor rotted they just fell out

Yeah, I was surprised my tank never fell out, went under my back tire and flipped my truck. That tank has got to be exremely heavy. My wood was rotted too.

A few of the tanks I have pulled out I have had to weld a 1/2'' nut to the flange because the 1/2'' hole rounded out while trying to unscrew the anchors.
