My sons 69, 250/4speed has been changed over to HEI and starts and runs good, but at increased speeds she acts as if she is starved of gas or is missing. We have checked the vaccum advance and all seems to work well. Can anyone help, Ideas??????????? Thanks in advance.........Kirby

Check the timing. Also, make sure that both ground straps are inside of the dizzy cap, there should be two.

did you replace the wire from the fuse box to the dizzy ? if not thats your problem the factory wire was to run points and it doesnt carry enough power to run the hei dizzy properly
go to the FAQ board and look for the way to fix the problem Last edited by tnblazerk5; 06-28-2005 at 11:27 PM. |

I am glad that I came online tonight. I just got through towing mine back to our garage to check it over. Same problem, every once in a while it acts up. Tonight it is acting like it is starved of gas, but it could be because of the HEI swap that we did.

I went all thru the HEI [twice] on the 350 in my '71 Jimmy a couple of summers ago. Then I thought it was vapor lock, so I encased the fuel line in white fuzzy stuff. Still not it. Turned out to be the fuel pump. When it got hot, it just gave up. New fuel pump, and it went good.

I was having the same problem with my 93 GMC. It would stall out at higher speeds, or if I ran the A/C. I seamed like it wasn't getting any gas. After replacing many parts on her it ended up being the distributor and when the old one was pulled the magnet under the rotor was cracked in about 3 or 4 places cousing it to over heat, missfire, and shut down. with the new one in she's back !!!!!! I sat on the brakes and gave it gas half the way down and she was scremming !!! I have to say it hasent done that since I bought it back in 95.

You guys might think im nuts, but mine was doing the same thing since I change over to a HEI. I installed an old Sun Tach on my truck Sunday.
Did not drive it until yesterday, my truck ran smooth with no miss. Im sure some or all of you have tachs, just saying what worked for me. Might had something to do with that open circut on my HEI tach side. I don't know, just know it seemed to have found power. |

Had a problem with mine the other day still not sure if it is right but sometimes it would not start like it had no fire. I noticed that if I unhooked the tach it would start come to find out the ground on the coil was loose.
67ChevyRedneck I know of the ground on the coil where is the other.

Here's a link to a thread where someone else had problems with their HEI. SHIFTY did a great job showing pics of the two grounds. The ground in my truck that goes between the red and yellow wires is an actual metal strap, but a wire with the proper clips would work fine (just like the one SHIFTY shows). I had to go to a junkyard to get it.... couldn't find anyone who sold em. You might have better luck.

Some things I have seen cause the problem you describe:
- Using the old white wire for points (you need to run a new from the block line for HEI) - Any of the problems above described internally to the dizzy (broken magnet, carbon buildup on rotor, etc.) - The gap on sparkplugs for HEI needs to be larger than points system - Try using new, better quality wires if you got em - I broke down because of an overheat one day. My HEI will stopped working entirely until I pulled off and let the motor cool down for about a half an hour, so I'm guessing heat could be your problem. Don't ask me what you can do about it though
