i posted a few days ago that i had a clanking noise coming from my rear end,and after careful inspection fund some missing tranny/bellhousing bolts and replaced the missing hardware. well that wasent it. I drove to work this morning and herd the noise again and thaught what the hell is it now??? at work i talked dto a few friends that dident have a clue eather one stating that ill find out soon enough when it breaks and jokingly i concured and set yea then i can fix it. got cut lose around 0730 because weare leaving country soon, and sure as hell at the speed bump rite before the back gate the right rear tire shot off and down i went . i skidded off the road stopping 5 feet from the tank track breakers ( they use them t stop terrorists from charging the fence cause they will total a vehicle) and i watched my tire roll by and hit the gaurd shak. some poor bastard was in there most likely reading a 6 month old off stuff and then wam! he thaught the gaurd shack was being attacked and damnear shot me coming around the corner. the problem was the studs hey broke and will the rest is history really biffed my bed up but after all the dents i pulled i recon it really dosent matter any how ill fix it too well that was my day how was yours ill post pics soon

Not trying to hijack here, but I almost posted this a while back. The answer may be easy, but do you think wheel 35 year old wheels studs should or need be replaced as a maintenance item, or if they look good just leave them alone ? Are generic parts store studs OK, or is something like an ARP needed ? I have the 6 bolt with the 7/16 studs, thanks.

I feel your pain, been there done that. Lost a bfg 33x12.50 at close to freeway speeds. Glad to hear you made it out safe.
@Green Machine: If it were me I'd replace them, small price for piece of mind. Saulgoode |

Man, just remembered , I better change those, about 20 years ago made a 10 mile drive at 120 mph with 3 buddies to the next tavern in my 68 chevelle. Pulled off on a gravel road to drain some used beer, going about 40 then, about 1/2 mile down the road the right rear tire, big meats, squirted out from under the car, tire went way out into the field, we landed on traction bar and stopped, bent fender, but if that would have come off when..................???????????

Lucky man Charlie Brown that you and others are safe and healthy. Did the guard take a latrine break following the incident or was that a laundry break

Certain rims will break studs. My '69 has cheap "wagon wheel" rims, and those are stud-bustin' mothers!

When I had aluminum slots on my 70, it ate several sets of studs. One day my brother was driving and both rear wheels come off. Ended up taking dad's backhoe lifting the rear up and wheel barrowin the truck home to be fixed. Even with the centerline hellcat's I had one front one try to come off on the freeway. Things started vibrating terribly. Ended up not being the studs themselves but the front drum hub. All the studs started working loose in the hub. After switching to front discs and finding some longer and slightly larger in diameter rear studs things have been real good.

The turbines I had (and the wagon wheel spare) liked bustin lugs on the old 69 GMC.
'Had an '80 chevy Monza that tossed a wheel once. I was only doin 40, but that's enough to make you panic. Like Bill Cosby said.... First you say it... THEN you do it! (sh!t) |
