Painting headers - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Thanks to a fellow board member, I have some headers.

Anyway, they need repainted. I got a buddy at work that has a sand blaster, so I can get them cleaned off pretty good. Do I need to prime them first(if so, what kind or brand?) or just paint them with some high temp. paint(again, wind kind or brand is the best?)?

i would like to know what to use to paint them to, and i can sandblast them myself

I'd say powdercoat or JetHot Coating are best of course.

I would to, but I'm not going to spend $195 on a set of $130 painted headers.

get em powder coated or jet .....

i've tried on several different occassions, with several different brands....everything from cheap can spray to the more expensive eastwood stuff...never had what i call any real luck

i say save your self the time and get em jet coated...nice finish

If they were some nice shorties, I would consider getting them coated. They are just some basic painted Hedman Headers with some slight rust. I just want them to look decent. What about the "home" powder coating kits? I want to get them done for no more then $30 in materials.

A good alternative to using paint is to use copper coat spray gasket. It doesnt burn off and once it has been hot enough it turns to a greyish color.

This may not be what you are looking for, but I can testify that it works great. It's Eastwood brand Stainless Steel High Temp Coating. It gives your exhaust a fresh cast iron finish, and it is very durable. The nice part about it is it can be applied with a brush and still looks good once it has heat cycled a few times....

Most powder coaters don't have the coatings that will stand up to the high heat of headers, but there are some that do. My bet is that the charge to coat headers is not that bad. Ofcourse the purchase of a new set of creamic coated headers is not that bad either. I have a set on my stroker engine that has held up for a good noumber of years. I just had them off last winter to redo the engine and they are still in great shape.

Oky I will Answer you question.

VHT sells a flame proof paint. Its great. by far the best spray can headder paint. Lasts fairly well. I have 3000 mile's most of that was in the rain. I sandblasted and painted using the flat black paint. They still look great. Cant beat it think it was $13 cdn for the can. You will need 2 cans.

from summit, it's 2000 degree paint, safe for a pair of headers. summit sells good stuff so i'd buy it, but that's later down the road for me.
