Dropping the distributor

Hey Ya'll, I just finished putting the heads back on my 89 burb and when I went to "drop" the distributor into the intake manifold it wouldn't go down all the way. The gear doesn't even contact the gear on the camshaft. The rotor just spins freely. I made sure when the manifold was off to protect the hole so nothing would drop down there and now I'm stumped. Ran a magnet around in the hole and nothing came out. I've never had this much trouble putting a distributor back in a small block. Can anybody tell me if there's a trick or what I'm missing?

sounds like the distributor shaft and oil pump are not lining up. Are you putting the dizzy back in w/ the rotor in the same place it was when you removed it.
