VIN number - cab swap

I just picked up a 77 K10 stepside, and hope to save the frame and build a decent driver for my plow truck. I looked on the dash where you usually see a vin and there is nothing there. Is the vin only on the door opening on the cab? I saw a plate there with a vin, but it has been painted over. I want to use the cab from my K20, but it's an 87, and I want to keep the truck pre-smog (1985 for NH) by running it as a 77, if possible. I know there are some sticky issues surrounding that . Anyhow, is there supposed to be a vin plate on the dash? Did somebody maybe cover it up with a new dash or dash cover? Also looking for a cheap carb just to make the stepper run before I tear it apart. It is complete except for the carb. Thanks very much guys!

Re: VIN number - cab swap

The 77 cab I have only has the VIN on the door frame, nothing on the dash.

1973 - 1978 have the VIN in the door post ONLY. 1979- up have it displayed in the dash.

Re: VIN number - cab swap

Do you have a clean title for the 77? If you do, the truck can be registered as a 77 even if you run the 87 cab. The VIN is on the frame too. It will take a trip (or two) to your local DMV but it can be done....

Re: VIN number - cab swap

Crap you would have to ask that. I haven't seen my Blazer in so long I don't remeber what it looks like. If I remember correctly it is on the drivers side close to the kick up in the front. Chris, Russell anyone want to confirm this....

Re: VIN number - cab swap

My frame vin is on the outside of my passenger side rail. If I remember correctly, its right below the door. I had a hard time making it out till I wirebrushed it, then I was able to see it fairly clearly.

My frame is from a 79 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, with my old 2wd 1980 cab sitting on top of it. I talked to the DMV about that, and they said it wasn't a problem so long as I had a bill of sale for both vehicles, which I do. No titles up here The 80's frame was too rusty, the VIN musta flaked off, cause I never did find it.

Ok, I was wrong on what side unless the Blazer is different. I still thought it was farther forward.....

Re: VIN number - cab swap

I'll take a look this afternoon -- I'll actually have some time to get some stuff done before it gets dark and cold outside today, lol

Re: VIN number - cab swap

I don't quite think so...

I've heard of it being on the top of the frame rail for some vehicles, on the inside for others, or on the side like mine. Seems to be wherever the factory worker felt like putting it at that specific moment.

Re: VIN number - cab swap

OK I will look. I was told long time ago that it was on the drivers side back of the wheel and I could never find it. I probably should have just gone over the whole frame. I guess I will Sunday. Tougher now with paint on it.

Thanks guys, have a great weekend.

Re: VIN number - cab swap

Just reading this reminded me I forgot to look. Wife has too many projects for me! haha

It is covered up and away for the winter in the garage but maybe I will try to get under it. Hard with a 5/5 drop though!
