Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I have a 70 that had a 6 in it. I put a 350 in it on the 6cyl. mounts. The dist. almost touched the firewall. When I put in my t-56 trans I had to move the motor forward, used the V8 mounts. I have the long water pump, plenty of room. They made three motor mounts for these trucks, one for 6cyl., one for small blocks, and one for big blocks. I just wonder if you might have the big block mounts.

Re: 350 Engine Position (Long ? sorry)

I have been following this thread because we are in the same spot, only with the front of the motor completily assembled the fan is well outside the shoud. is that going to be a big problem, not near truck so cann't post picture. i would say the fan is 2+ inches from outer edge of shroud. dave

The long and short pump situation doesn't make that much of a difference. The only option is that the towers for you mounts are in the wrong location or are backwards from left to right. I had a 72 Sierra Grande with the long pump and I didn't have any clearance issues at all

OK, this may be a dumb question, but if you move from the 6 to the 8 position, will the driveshaft have to be modified? or should there be enough play for the 3+- inches?

You should really just modify the driveline. If the motor is farther forward you mess with the shift linkage setting, power steering hose clearances, fuel pump clearance, exhaust manifold or header cleance problems, and I have even seen the fan not pull as hard if it is to close to the radiator.

You are looking @ 3 1/2" (plus or minus 1/8) to make the move from I 6 to sb V8 spot......it will pull the slipyolk right out of the trans (D shaft time!) I personally prefer the sb set in on the 6/250 stands...... L

The fan location does need to be addressed. If it is completely outside the shroud it might not cool very well at idle speeds. A properly located fan should be about half in and half out of the fan shroud. Just yesterday I was reading a post from a guy who's fan was completely inside the shroud and was having an overheating condition at slow speeds. If you are considering moving your engine to the forward position it should get the fan close to where it needs to be.

It looks like you have a running/driving combo.....why mess with it? from what I see, if you add a rad shroud from a 4x4 blazer with a sb, you should have it covered L

So the 4x4 shroud is deeper than the standard shroud?

Yup, 4x4 BLAZER with sb has the eng set in the same as I 6 position,& does have a longer shroud. I havent been into the 4x4's too much from that era, so I couldnt say on the 4x4 pickup tho. another trick that works is the 73-up long pump /pullies /pcs on the nose. On the SB in I6 spot swap in the 2wd trucks the later pump is a little longer, & you can add a short spacer to live with the diff (using a 2wd SB V8 shroud).....or you can get a wild hair , & add a couple elect fans ,& TOTALLY forget about the space tween the fan & radiator(makes more power to the rear wheel too ) L
