Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
I have a SBC with a short water pump in the standard V8 position in my Burb. If I use a serpentine kit, is it best to remove the fan shroud?? I assume the serpentine setups all use the long water pump. Is this correct?? My current setup uses a fan clutch and the fan is just inside the shroud, not half in, half out like recommended, but thats another story. Also, is it recommended to go to a 8" balancer, since the 6" balancer would not be required for the new PS pump??

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
If you go with a serpentine kit, you will have to switch to a reverse rotation water pump anyway. And I am almost positive mine is a long pump. (But I have electric fans, so I can't help with that part.

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
I found out for sure that the water pump is the long style. What about the balancer or fan shroud???

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
I am running a 7-blade clutch fan(reverse blades) but to do this you will need a BB fan shroud. The balancer should be fine its size has nothing to do with the pulley sizes

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
So the BB shroud is smaller than the SB. I was only asking about the balancer because I have to use the 6" balancer with the PS pump mount. If I do this, then I will change to a 8" balancer. How much smaller is the BB shroud than the SB???

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
This is the only pic I have with BB shroud with long pump SB. The fan sits half in and half out of the shroud where the fan will be almost completely inside with SB shroud.

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
Raising this post from the dead...
I am considering going with a serpentine kit MAINLY due to the A/C kit I purchased and am installing. I want a clean look with it, so I need some clean bracketry with it. This is the kit I am considering: http://www.marchperf.com/pg64.html I also have the short water pump stock. So if I understand correctly, I need to either go with electric fans, or go with a BB shroud? The balancer issue would be due to the type of kit, correct?

Re: Water Pump on Serpentine Kit
I haven't put my kit in yet. I just got another truck, I was scared to take it apart since it is my DD. Anyways, I was going to go with a BB shroud. I think you can go with either size balancer. I wanted to change mine to an
8", I am only using the smaller one because I have to because of the PS pump. BTW, my a/c compressor mounts on the passenger side. If you want that, the early nineties trucks are like that. |
